Where do you go if you don't want to go home for a break, like during Christmastime or the spring or whatever. Like do all colleges require you to leave the school grounds for the entire period, or does it vary? I don't have any plans to come back home any time soon when I go to college.

at my school you can fill out a form and stay at school during break if you really want to.

That would suck to not be with family during Thanksgiving or Christmas. Spring break, I can see why you'd want to stay back, but Christmas? Come on.

At most of the schools I have gone to they close the dorms for breaks, but leave one open for "special cases"

usually they have some type of housing available over the breaks if you fill out forms by the deadline... but i think you would want to go home for christmas, even to see friends, family, and really be able to relax, instead of being pretty much by yourself for several weeks

man, you and your parents must really hate each other...who wouldn't want to go home for Christmas?

We don't hate eachother, really, I am just going out there for a reason and going back home so recently wouldn't make any sense. And yes I would really rather be alone somewhere than go back home for the holidays.

generally dorms are closed between winter and spring breaks.
No food service, no heat

...I've heard of professors hosting students who can't or don't want to go home during breaks....I can see internationals not going home...

Back in the dark ages when I went to college they always kept at least one dorm open for kids who did not head off campus. This worked out great over Thanksgiving and spring break. That said most kids who stayed over the winter break (3 weeks) got pretty bummed out since there were so few people around for quite a period of time. My suggestion would be to find somewhere to head over the long winter break even if it is not home (visit friends .. take that trip to Mexico you've always wanted to take ... visit a sib)

Public schools are the most likely to totally close dorms during the breaks and require all students to leave. That's because they will have few students coming from far away. I'd suggest checking with each school on an individual basis. At most schools that do keep one or two dorms open, they suggest you sign up to live in that dorm for the year so this is something you need to research and request upfront. In almost all cases - public or private - you will have to pay an extra fee in order to remain in housing over longer breaks.
