what name do you call the university?

Which name do you call the university, your personal preference:

Cal, UC Berkeley, Berkeley....or any other.

Berkeley

Cal is way too arrogant and ambiguous.

It is referred to as Cal because it was the 1st of the UC’s and because it resulted from a merger that included the College of California. I don’t think it is arrogant as it was a common name used by the “older” generations. I think it is a less commonly used nickname now that there are so many UC’s.

^The US was the first independent country in the Americas, but that doesn’t make it not arrogant to call it “America.”

I usually mix it up between Cal and Berkeley, but if I had to pick one I’d say Cal (mostly because that’s what I’m used to calling it). I don’t think it’s ambiguous. No other school calls themselves Cal … it’s UC Berkeley’s nickname. To me, Berkeley is a city. Also, it’s not the only college in Berkeley so it doesn’t uniquely identify it.

“Where are you going to school?”
“Berkeley.”
“Berkeley City College?”
“No. Cal.”
“Ohhh, got it.”

I’ve heard NorCal students call it “Berk.”

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/898641-cal-vs-berkeley.html

I call it Berkeley, but I don’t live in California, so maybe more people do call it Cal.

I personally call it UC Berkeley, just because many people I talk to don’t know the nickname “Cal.”

But “Cal” is fine, as long as the audience knows what you’re referring to. I don’t think “Cal” is any more “arrogant” or more “ambiguous” than “Xerox machine,” or “Kleenex,” or “dial” (someone on your smart phone), or (buying a) “PC.” It’s part of the language dynamics.

Cal. That’s what everyone in CA calls it.

yea many people call it Cal in the bay area

I like saying Cal but some people don’t know much about universities so it’s safer to say UC Berkeley. UC Berkeley is also the prestigious name that is known around the world.

I was once asked what school I attend and I said “Cal”
And they responded by saying “Cal Poly?”

Of course I said no with a ridiculously smug look on my face…

Nothing wrong with saying Cal… but most outside of Berkeley don’t really know what’s Cal so it’s safer to just use UC Berkeley or Berkeley.

In California, I use Cal. It was always supposed to be called Cal.

Outside, I refer to my alma mater as Berkeley.

Or maybe they do, but we’ve managed to miss them for the last XXyears.

For those who live in Berkeley the town or go to the University of California at Berkeley it’s CAL.
