Just curious to see what people think about the issue of a lot of U.S. women tending to overlook the field? Computer Science is my favorite subject, and I think it's beautiful and some of the basic abstractions and concepts(such as data structures, databases, etc) would be useful to everyone even if it's not what they intend on pursuing.

At my university, there are very very few girls majoring in CS, and a lot of us guys would like to introduce the importance of this field to a greater public in general. Hopefully, we will one day see a world where a lot of our motivated and talented girl-peers will be able to beneficially contribute to society, and enjoy the fruits of their fun and intellectually-stimulating work that requires a lot of independent thinking.

What can be done here to help and encourage U.S. women develop a genuine interest in this field? I know (statistically) that in other financially-improving and powerful countries such as Russia, China, and many other countries across the world, there is a LOT more female participation in these fields. America seems to be particularly severe and dismal in this respect :(. Anyone would like to share their constructive opinions and thoughts?
