I want to talk to one of my teachers about starting up a project at my school that will assist me in getting the Silver Knights Award.

I was thinking about starting up an organization that would donate money to a "bigger" organization that helps children in Africa [homeless, destitute, AIDS victims, etc.] I am sure you have seen several commercials on TV concerning this.

I am not doing this for the award itself. I always intended on doing this, but Silver Knights is a prestigious award that I would like to pursuit.

Does anyone have any idea? What could I do?

Everything is appreciated! No idea is stupid!

Haha, it was on here before , go to InvisibleChildren (dot) com. It is to help children displaced in Darfur and surrounding areas that have been almost entirely forgotten by the governments of major countries. It raises money to help build schools and get essential products down there such as clean water and shelter.

I actually did Google it, and found according to sources it should be:

"a national organization created to raise awareness of the child victims of war in northern Uganda."

I want to try and avoid anything concerning Darfur as there already is an organization at my school that's donating funds to help out with that situation.

I am definitely going to look into this. Thanks so much!

Hey Rosh420 -- It's great you want to start your own initiative! You might want to check with what the previous users said about the Invisible Children project. The situation in Uganda is rather irrelevant to what's happening to Sudan since it is an internal issue between a rebel group and the government of Uganda. You might want to watch the Invisible Children documentary because it's very detailed, emotional and intriguing.

It's ironic but when I was at Notre Dame for a visit, they were holding a fundraiser for an organization called "Touching Tiny Lives." It is "a non-profit organization committed to ensuring the health and reclaiming the dignity of children impacted by HIV/AIDS in Lesotho, Africa." The organization was started by 2 former Peace Corps volunteers. Their website is www.touchingtinylives.org.

Another idea you might want to explore is the anti-human trafficking campaign happening right now. Equality Now and several other important organizations are working to promote anti-human trafficking legislation in the United States. I believe House Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) is one of the toughest advocates on such legislation.

You could also consider starting an Amnesty International chapter, if your school doesn't have one. It deals with a lot of issues related to human rights, including Darfur.
