National Honor Society

Our school just had it's NHS elections and the new president is on a mission. He really wantes to do something that will impact the community, and make NHS more than something that you put on a resume. So I figured I'd post a question for you all.

In what ways could a chapter of NHS positively affect a community?

We were thinking possibly working with a group like Habitat for Humanity to build a few houses, but we wanted a few more ideas. Anyone?

-Canned Food Drives
-Tutor at elementary schools
-Blood Drive

Those are all things we did this year as well as a fundraiser. The money we made from the fundraiser went toward our banquet and several sponsorships we gave out. We bought 25 care packages thru the USO and adopted a girl in the Dominican I believe as well as a school in Africa.

Blood drives are always good, as are food drives. This year, we also had a mini-golf tournament fundraiser with all proceeds to a good cause. Help clean up a local park, or volunteer at a Children's Museum or animal shelter or school. Possibilities abound.

The yearbook girls at my school just did this really successful fundraiser for the Invisible Children fund, which is based on a documentary of the same name shot by three [uber-hot and funny] guys who traveled to Uganda to film the devastation there. They ended up focusing on the practice of forced child soldiering, and the documentary is really moving, shocking, and enlightening. It's definitely life-altering for everyone who sees it.

They showed the film during lunches and during class, and collected donations from every 2nd period class and had a contest. Also, they sold these DVDs, cute t-shirts, and bracelets made by the affected children to go toward the fund. Go to the Invisible Children web site to get you started--our school made tons of money for this worthy cause.
