What religion are you?

I know this may seem off topic, but i want to notice a trend for ppl who are really smart (u, bc u talk here in CC)

are you guys athiest, christian? buddist?lol

i'm just wondering

I've noticed that (generally speaking, don't attack me) many of the smartest people I know are atheist and are adamantly against organized religion. As for myself, I am a Catholic, but I am a liberal and I don't agree with all tenets of the faith. I think that being overzealous in anything is dangerous with atheism or christianity. The God I know is not intolerant or closed minded. Truly throughout history religious fanaticism has caused pain and bloodshed, but if one were to follow the true spirit of their respective religion I think that peace would be entirely possible. Say what you will, but Jesus was a liberal and everything I know about other religions tells me that they are centered in ideals of peace. So for me, I would have to say that I am a tolerant and open christian who doesn't impose belief systems on others and seeks to live a life of service. Many of the fundamentalists I know have lost sight of the true spirit of their faith as they are adamant supporters of the war and condemning gays to hell. Whatever happened to "thou shalt not kill" and "let him who is without sin cast the first stone?"

Hindu with bits and pieces of Theraveda Buddhism thrown in.

by the way, you probably won't notice a trend on account of the fact that smart people (with the exclusion of the prestige whores) think for themselves and so they develop their own special philosophy that is usually unique by anyone's standards.

krishna consciousness is tight.

religion is a tool used to control the masses....

In total agreement with you. A Catholic who is not a fanatical adherent and a self-proclaimed liberal, I can say that I agree with every word you have said. Well done.

why thank you... we need a bigger following

ditto with catsmeow

Atheist, but if I had to choose, I would be Buddhist. I hate organized religion as I do not believe it serves any person and is used as a crutch by many.

I'm a non-denominational Christian and by God we need more people like catsmeow in the world - if we did, the world would truly come together and end all hate and bigotry. Great post.

atheist

imho, religions are just milking money out of people :)

Gosh here I was worried that I would be torn apart. I'm glad that I am not alone in my views!

I'm Catholic.

communist....

catsmeow87: Seems like we are the only ones who call ourselves as "Catholics." But, I agree with the first post you made on this thread. :)

Agnostic, I guess you could say...I celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc. lol

um, pentecostal, christian, denomination- assemblies of God. For one, though churches and denominations can be off-center, i feel that the bible is infallible. i think the assemblies of God is one of the more liberal denominations and tries to stay away from trite traditions.... hmm, posting on this thread almost seems risky- i hope you guys dont rip me apart too bad :)

lol, communism is now considered a religion, eh?

I am a Roman Catholic according to applications I fill out. But of course with anything, I don't completely agree with it. I consider myself to be somewhat of an objectivist (Ayn Rand's philosophy of selfishness as a virtue) and I have recently been considering Taoism and Bhuddism.

(Is it just me, or are a lot of emo music fans agnostic?)

I like to say I'm non-religious. Atheist is too strong a description, because I don't actively *dis*believe in a God. It just doesn't factor into my life. If I had to think about it, I suppose I'd call myself an agnostic.
