1) no
2) Likely none at all. Some would say some very selective colleges (UChgo, NU) that being one of many Asian applicants makes it difficult to stand out in the crowd. But in general, none.

1) No, u don’t have to specify your race. But if your last name is Gupta, McPherson, Goldstein, Wong, or Garcia, the adcoms will still have a mental image of your race as they read your packet. And unless u wear a burkha or balaclava during your campus visit, it’s clear for anyone to see.

2) race can hurt your chances if a particular race is vastly over-represented at that school. It’s a school-by-school situation, not a state-by-state one. Asians in Illinois may be very much over-represented at U Chicago, but under-represented at some obscure LAC.

UIUC: public. Generally no affect whatsoever. However, they likely devote extra effort into recruiting applicants from URMs. What is your ethnicity?

Even if you don’t have a name that gives away your ethnicity, isn’t it true that if you don’t choose your race, admissions officers will assume you aren’t a URM (so, probably white or Asian)?
