What’s the right thing to do when you are out dining and sharing expenses

Our Applebee’s gives separate checks if you ask. New England.

In the Midwest, separate checks are no problem. I was in florida…no problem there either. And no problem in California in San Diego and East Bay areas.

I’m not saying it would be a problem, just that the server wouldn’t ask, since it’s not a common request.

That’s why different towns matter.

I’m in a college town and it’s almost always asked no matter the type (casual, formal, etc) of establishment. (And we definitely don’t pass as students anymore.)

Oh yes, some of my friends carry cash. I never have cash and if I need it, I have to take it from my husband’s wallet .I wasn’t big into the Venmo thing until my D’s tutor asked me. Now I love it. The salon I go to lets me tip with Venmo and it’s so much easier then trying to remember cash (it’s the only place I go that requires cash). My husband appreciates it as well.

I hang out a lot with the 30 and under crowd, so Venmo is the thing. They think the fact that I want a real bank I can walk into is silly. Don’t get me started on check writing- I’m not sure any of them have ever done it!

We’re often the ones drinking the extra wine or ordering the fancy appetizer. If our friends insist splitting evenly we insist that the tip is on us. If it all goes on one persons credit card we usually try to make sure that our half is close to fair, erring on the over not the under.

When we throw money into a pot on the table, folks are generally pretty generous so the tip is quite large we rarely ever end up on the low side. If we do, folks throw in more to be sure servers get nice tip.
