Collegeboard has a lot of free practice tests. You do not have to take all of them in a simulated environment with timers, but you can do sections untimed and check your answers. Especially for reading, I believe this is the best way to improve your score. If you have $20 to spare, Princeton Review has a great SAT book. That being said, I am retaking my SAT in August for a 1500+ and I have a tutor but they give me a lot of material to practice with.
I haven’t found Khan Academy really helpful but I think retaking practice tests works best for me. May I ask, what was your initial SAT score before you started practicing with the materials and your tutor? Thank you.
@Aneem00
I got a 1350 with bare minimum practice (I practiced for about 2 weeks before the test) because school was killing me. i’m a junior in a very rigorous program at a highly ranked school so…yeah. But i took a practice test a couple weeks ago in a test environment simulation and got a 1530. so it’s definitely possible, but i started preparing in April for my August SAT. Just dedicate at least 45 minutes a day to pure practice, no distractions. When do you plan to take your next SAT? Are you a rising senior, junior?
I am planning to take my next SAT test this August as an incoming senior. I hope to score in the 1250-1300 range. I have been doing some practice for a few months but I am dealing with a family crisis so it can be hard to balance my practice sessions. I hope to raise my score up to a 1400 on the October SAT…my main issues are with the math portion of the exam. @Aneem00
Math? I see. Well I recommend lots of practice problems. Starting with Khan academy, you can see which sub sections of math you need work on. For example, probability may be a weak spot. Then, you can develop that skill with practice problems from any free website offering them. If time is an issue, you can work on ACT math problems too. (60 minutes for 60 questions) That way, the time allotted for the math SAT sections will seem like much longer. Try to finish all of your testing by the latest November so college applications will be a little less stressful.
Recently, I took a practice test and I scored a 500 out of 800…I am trying to improve that score by my August test hopefully up to 650…I know I have limited time but I was wondering how to plan my practice sessions conveniently so that I can not be overwhelmed with all my homework yet still devote some time during the week for only SAT prep. Would you suggest finding a one on one tutor to help me reach my target? If you have any recommendations for tutors, please list them! thank you. @Aneem00
Well from today, Saturday, you have exactly 5 weeks until you take the SAT. I would suggest spending 1 hour or more (the more time, the better) dedicating yourself solely to practice. Reading, writing, math, whatever you need. Spend the whole hour on the weakness if you need to. You should start seeing improvements in both speed and accuracy by Week 2. It honestly depends on the individual though. 150 points improvement in reading is a bigger challenge than 150 points up in math. SAT math is quite straightforward but you need to manage your time. Like I said before, practice makes perfect in this case. Strategies may help, but they’re no way around practice. Until school begins, the 1 hour should not be too difficult. Once schools starts, you will need to adjust your schedule accordingly. Do not do what I did. Yes, homework is more important, but you need to manage your time because by the time schools starts, you will only have a week or two left until your SAT. In summary: Practice as much as you can daily this summer.
And as for the tutor, they are great, but they can also be very expensive (especially the ones that guarantee 150+ points increase). I understand that many people cannot afford those prices, which is fine, it is TOTALLY possible to achieve a great score with no tutor. As for tutors to recommend, unfortunately I cannot. That might compromise my location and this is, for the most part, an anonymous website. Ask friends if you need a tutor (and are able to afford them) or search online. I am not sure if a tutor will work with you for just 5 weeks though.
Best of luck.
A tutor can help in the time span you have. Ask around. Many are on teaching sites that list tutors (sorry forgot the names). We found a tutor and used like 5 times once a week and really hones down on deficiency right before the tests. Most of the pay sites that claim to raise your scores comes down to how familiar you are with the test. Almost all of them suggest doing weekly full tests. So get some practice books from the library and every Saturday go to the quiet room in the library or where ever and take the full tests. Every weekend. Yes, this is a lot to do. Even get up at the same time as your test will be, eat breakfast etc. You are literally practicing for that test day. Kids that take the multiple times tend to see score go up. Work on your deficiencies. It all comes down to how bad you want it.
I don’t pm much but just sent you one if I did it correctly… Ha
