This might be a stupid question but I really don’t know what’s exactly expected out of dance majors in regards to school supplies? Do you ever take notes for your dance classes or have any sort of written homework? Just trying to figure out whether or not it would make sense to buy 5 notebooks for all of my 5 classes haha. I’m not taking dance history this semester, I have all technique classes. So tap, ballet, jazz, modern, and improv.
What would you say are the recommended supplies as a dance major? (Besides dance apparel and shoes of course). And yes, I know I can “ask my school” but I do hope y’all realize how impossible it is to get ahold of the dance department at just about every school I’ve tried to ask questions to, including the one I’m about to attend. So that’s why I’m here! Thanks!
There will be no supplies beyond the basic paper and pencils required on the first day of class. Syllabi will be handed out with any additional supplies needed. The campus bookstore should have a list of required textbooks. Get the ISBN’s and shop online before buying from the bookstore.
My daughter is a rising senior in high school, but she always has a notebook and pen with her in dance class. She has always take notes and written corrections or observations about class and/or rehearsal. Not sure if that will continue in to college dance, but maybe?
Leotards and black tights. That was a change from our studio wear. New shoes of all styles. Also, you do need academic supplies like notebooks. My DD needed a music staff ruled notebook for music theory. And you need a binder for all the articles you read.
I’m only a dance minor, but I’ve basically finished my requirements already.
For technique classes at my school, we do have written assignments (reading reflections, performance critiques), research paper), but they were typed and either emailed in or turned in hard copy. Always have with me loose leaf paper and something to write with, though, because if we have to sit out for whatever reason (injury, illness, etc), we’re required to take notes and turn them in at the end of class, in lieu of dancing.
For improv/choreography, we needed a composition notebook for each, and we generally would write in it every class and also for homework assignments (also had typed critiques and reading reflections as well), so we did need stuff to write with as well.
