What school year do I put on fafsa and css?

I went to college for three semesters. Then during my fourth semester I left early (withdrew from all my classes and left.) I was out of school for a couple years and now I’m coming back.

My question is: what year should I put on my fafsa and css? Am I considered a sophomore/second year student since I never finished my second year of college? Or am I considered a junior/third year student?

Is it based on credit hours? Or is it based on how many semesters of financial aid I received? I did receive aid for that fourth semester. When I left I’m guessing the grants were simply cancelled? I’m not sure how it all works. Any help would be appreciated.

It is based on credits. If it is a semester college, and you have between 30-60 credits, you are usually considered a sophomore.

If you make a mistake and put you are a junior when credit-wise are a sophomore, the FA office will probably fix it.
