So Im interested in going to school for Engineering, for Fall 2010. I am a rising senior right now and I am wondering what schools would be good matches for me and my SATs, GPA, etc that I could get a decent engineering degree at.

SATs: 1920: (CR 720) (M 610) (W 590)
GPA: 3.65 W
SAT2s: (US hist 700) (MATH2 510 yeah, ouch. should i retake?)

3 years cross country, 1 year lacrosse. Leadership positions in clubs, mentoring programs.
No community service.

I come from a large, competitive public high school in southern california, and I would say im in the top 20% of my class.

I know that my stats arent awesome, but could anyone suggest schools that are decently well known for engineering that I have a shot at?

Im thinking schools like CU Boulder, maybe even Northeastern? Others?

What type of engineering do you want to study? Do you have a geographic preference? Are you looking for a school with a small or large student body? Is weather a factor for you?

Maybe UCI, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO, Colorado School of Mines, New Mexico Tech, U of Missouri S&T (Rolla), Texas Tech. Also try Rose-Hulman or Case Western if you can get accepted and can afford either of them.

I am currently leaning towards Mechanical as my major. I dont really have much preference geographically, if the school is good enough and I get accepted, geography and weather wouldnt stand in my way. Although Id like to stay in the US. I would prefer the student body to be on the medium-larger side of population.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into them.

Cal Poly would be good. I would apply to the UCs since it’s one application, or was when I went, but I also wouldn’t rule out the state level schools like Sac State or Cal Poly. The great thing about engineering is you can find good schools at almost any level of admittance. UC Boulder is good, but so is School of Mines or Col. State. Michigan State also has a really good engineering program.

Although University of Colorado is a good school, I don’t think it’s worth the high out of state tuition when you have so many good schools in California. In my opinion, Cal Poly would be the best value for mech. eng. Definitely apply to most of the UC’s (maybe not merced or riverside). And for out of state schools, I would only apply to highly ranked schools because anything less would not be worth the tuition. Those might include Virginia tech, Texas a&m, University of Maryland, University of Washington, and rose hulman. And for a safety school, I would apply to san jose state, surprisingly, it’s actually ranked pretty well for engineering.

Since you live in California, definitely look at some of UC’s like UC Berkeley, UCLA, or UCSD. Those schools have Top 20 MechE programs, and tuition is a fraction of the price compared to private schools.
I’ve heard great things about CalPoly SLO, especially their alumni network and job connections.

WPI and RPI are good engineering schools in the northeast, although you will definatly need to improve your Math SAT if you want to get in to them. They are also fairly “geeky” schools, witch can be a good thing or a bad thing ,depending on who you are.

Top 10 engineering program, and it’s not the most selective school in the world. Weather isn’t the best, but if you don’t mind that part it seems like it might be a good fit.

hi i am an international student and doing my undergraduate bachelors in mechanical engineering. I was wondering if someone could guide me to a right university. I am right now in central michigan university and i am a freshman thinking to take transfer in one of the following. Wayne state university or Florida International university. Please help me to select a good one. Please …Thanks
