Just wondering...

Any Duke students or future (class of '09) Duke students...
Where else were you accepted? What was your final decision between? And why did you choose Duke over the others?

Thanks...

Other Places Accepted:
Brown University
Johns Hopkins University (applied on a whim)
Emory University
Boston University (applied on a whim also)

If I had not got into Duke U, I would be at Brown U most definitely. Turning down Brown was pretty difficult, but Duke is, in my opinion, better. Also, spending 4 days on Duke's campus only helped reaffirm my decision.

I was impressed by Duke's incredible placement into the top law schools, the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, the great internship opportunities, the balance of excellent academics and a great athletics program, the beauty of the campus, and the friendliness of the students. And yes, it's prestige did not hurt my decision at all ;)

JHU-- the location is meh; the food is meh. Duke's social life is better. And my heart was never really in it. Baltimore is NOT an endearing city.

Emory-- I am from ATL...time for a change. Plus, Duke just owns it..hehe.

Brown-- RI is coooold. Duke's FinAid package > Brown's FinAid package. Duke had key standouts, while Brown seemed to lack any real standout--still elite though seeing as it was my 2nd choice.

BostonU-- I have no clue why I applied.

University of Chicago (NM scholarship), Johns Hopkins, Davidson, UNC ($7000 scholarship), Wake Forest ($35000 scholarship)

University of Chicago- tied with Duke for my first choice, but horrible financial aid
Johns Hopkins- housing wasn't that great, bad financial aid, so-so depth of biology major
Davidson- waaaaaay too close to home (~10 min)
UNC- Almost all the IB'ers from my school are going there. I don't want high school all over again.
Wake Forest- Great scholarship, so I almost went there, although it wasn't my first choice. Luckily, Duke virtually matched the offer. :)

Why Duke? Awesome biology program, great study abroad programs, close to home, active social scene (but not too excessive), friendly student body, nice campus, great resources, focus on undergraduates, research opportunities...I could go on.

Other places accepted: Brown, Vanderbilt, Tulane Honors College, University of Florida Honors College, University of Miami Honors College. Merit scholarships: 1/2 tuition at Vandy, 3/4 Tuition at Tulane, Full tuition at UF and UM.

Brown - my 2nd choice, I always knew Duke was 1st.
Vandy - ultimately did not go there b/c of lack of diversity (racial, socioeconomic, etc.) and b/c I got into Duke :)
Tulane - pretty much applied there cuz the app was free and the reduced version of the regular one.
UF - pretty much everyone from the AP classes at my school goes there - our state's flagship pub u. I was actually nominated but did not get admitted to their Lombardi Scholars Program which is why I didn't really consider UF after getting into Duke. Lombardi is awesome - is equivalent to the Duke AB at Duke.
UM - I applied, but got rejected from their 7 yr med program. If I had gotten in, that would be a hard choice to make since its a basic guarantee on med school.

Why Duke - pretty much for all the reasons other ppl listed :)

Although I'm a soph, I had similar options.

It really came down b/twn Duke and Brown for me, and choosing Duke shocked everyone that I knew (I was such a stereotypical liberal, New England ivy-league-bound who didn't have school spirit), but it was a great decision. I also turned down Hopkins, Tufts, BC, BU, Barnard, GWU school of IR...

Other places accepted:

-Cornell University
-McGill University
-George Washington University (15K scholarship)
-University of Richmond (University Scholar, half tuition covered)
-London School of Economics
-Universit

Hmm...Duke over Brown really seems to be a trend. :)

I agree, I actually really liked Brown too.

Yeah same. Lol I actually found out I was accepted to Brown, while I was at Duke.

I turned down merit scholarships from a couple business schools (NYU Stern and CMU Tepper) and in-state UVA for Duke w/no financial aid. Heh.

I turned down:
USC, UCLA, UC Merced, UCSD, Brandeis, Barnard, Emory, Vassar, Harvey Mudd, Reed, Cornell, UC Berkeley, NYU, Bard

I turned down:

Tufts
George Washington University (Merit Scholarship)
Tulane Honors College (Merit Scholarship)

I really liked all the schools I applied to, but I'm extremely excited to be going to Duke.

Wow, I beat all of you guys in terms of my commitment to Duke.

Here goes:

Turned down....

Dartmouth
Cornell
Upenn (waitlisteded though :) )
Emory (basically a full ride with merit money up the ying yang)
Rice (sorta)

BAM!!!

Rice (Too frickin hot! School was not impressive aesthetically. Location was meh)

Emory (Prestige is very meh, uh...that's about it. DUKE IS BETTER)

Upenn (Now we get interesting. Penn has a great location, but their philosophy dept. is meh. Dude, Penn is awesome, I can't say anything negative about it.)

Cornell (wow...uhm...too cold, too dogmatic with working (their motto is sleep, eat, study. You only can pick two), prestige is fine though)

Dartmouth (MAN THIS WAS HAAARDD!! i basically did a coin toss for this one.)

DUKE!!!!!!!

Hey I almost tossed my Duke application into the trash like those from all the schools you listed (with the exception of UPenn/Wharton - my first choice and of course the only school that didn't accept me) just because, like them, it lacked an undergraduate b-school. Guess something was calling me to Durham. :)

Let's see...

Turned down:
University of Vermont
Boston University
Brandeis University
University of Colorado at Boulder

Laughed at being waitlisted at:
Emory Univeristy

Laughed at being rejected from:
Princeton University
Johns Hopkins University

Of course, the reason why I laughed was because I had already been accepted into Duke, which was my top choice. Plus, the rejection letters were really horrible and Emory never took me off the waitlist even though I told them to. Oh well.

Naw, I still got all of you beat.

ONE DUKIE TO RULE THEM ALL!

MEEE!!!!!!!!! :)

lol I expected more people to reject Penn for Duke, since our cross admit numbers are equal with them and Columbia.

If you're measuring devotion to Duke by how prestigious the schools you turned down are (lol, I hope you're not serious), one of my friends coming to Duke with me this fall creamed you. She turned down Harvard and Yale. :p

Damn, I admit defeat.

She wins. :)
She can be our emperor and I'll be the prime minister. Agreed? I'm sure we can give you a spot as the royal attendant or something.

haha lol jk

Hmm... I turned down UVa (out of state and country... heh, int'l student) and UCSD... along with a handful of safety schools with one or two scholarships.
Honestly, Duke was the best school I got into, and it has been awesome.

Laughed at being rejected by UC-Irvine. Do I cream everyone in THAT category??

devil, the turn down list for duke doesn't look as impressive as it was for Columbia or Penn, lolllll
