What schools (if any) would you turn down Harvard for?

UChicago and, if money agrees, Georgetown.

How come nobody mentions Notre Dame anywhere??

I chose ND over Harvard too!

probably MIT, Stanford, and Princeton. But I haven’t visited yet sooooo idk. I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to make that choice though.

“And for what it’s worth, I knew people who were at Harvard because they did not get in anywhere else; they would have turned down H for their dream school without a second thought.”

No offense to you but, if there is a single person you know that is complaining they ended up “stuck” with Harvard as their safety school and they don’t see this anything less than a marvelous opportunity, then they should not be going and taking up somebody’s spot who actually appreciates whats being offered to them. It sounds like the parents of whoever these people are have clearly done something wrong raising their child.

I am not saying everybody should be in love with Harvard, but you (not you you but you the person you are referring to) shouldn’t take a spot of such a selective school unless your nothing less than excited and happy to be going there and not seeing it as a backup plan (who even does that…). Pretty much goes for any competitive school to get into.

“I didn’t get into my dream school so I guess I have to go to… ugh… Harvard. #notevensarcastic #firstworldproblems”

Not to mention the likelihood of you ONLY getting into Harvard is pretty unrealistic.

edit: on an unrelated note,

@laxlawyer- have you not been paying attention to the news?

ND has been dominating college discussions in the past few weeks ha

Too busy studying for SAT tests! Lol. Can you tell me what the news is? A lot of people think I’m crazy to choose ND over Harvard.

I totally withdrew my app from ND. I don’t fare too well with Catholics or football ppl.
xD

mccruz, did you read what I posted? The individuals in question were accepted --only-- at Harvard. And you are suggesting they should have, what, gone to a community college instead because H was not their first choice?

Whether you think it is realistic or not, it has happened, it does happen. I know of current students at HYP who really wanted to go to another school but were rejected everywhere, even by their safeties, so they are at HYP. It does happen, however absurd the situation may appear to you.

Now, I absolutely agree that one should not apply to a school, any school, if one cannot imagine oneself being happy and thriving there. Like I said, my own children will not be applying to Harvard for precisely that reason. But that is not the same as applying to Harvard when it is not one’s top choice. If you apply to twelve schools, only one can be top choice, right? I do not see why Harvard should be everyone’s top choice, and I certainly can understand why an applicant might prefer another Ivy or another well-regarded university to Harvard.

UT Chattanooga, Fresno State, and maybe UNLV

@laxlawyer-

Manti te’o (ND’s Linebacker) fake girlfriend news [simply google his name and you will find tons of articles from every news website or sports website talking about it. I know its probably not the kind of discussion you were thinking when you asked why nobody talks about ND but I was half joking when I posted the comment :slight_smile: ]

@ridethewave-

Unless that person’s idea of a safety is another ivy league school/Stanfard, Duke, MIT, etc, I can’t see how Harvard accepted them and not their “safeties” which is obviously not a safety if you didnt get in… Safety is a gaurenteed school (yes there ARE gaurenteed schools for EVERYONE and Harvard students aren’t an exception…)

And no if you apply to 12 schools, there might be one top-choice, but there could be a split decision between 2,3 or maybe 4 different schools that are your top choice and you’d be equally happy at any of them (I know that is the situation for a lot of my friends right now in this college application process).

Now unless your a harvard legacy with parents who have donated their fair share to the school, I can only imagine that they just had bad luck that one year in the application decisions and that it was pretty difficult for the other schools that the child applied to to say no to them and they could probably transfer in the next year if they really want to. I don’t doubt that there are unhappy students in Harvard, there are unhappy students anywhere and everywhere- but I seriously doubt that the source of their unhappiness is being bound to pick Harvard because a lack of options and that they were unhappy with their decision going in. Which then I refer back to their parents doing something wrong raising their kids because that just comes off as extremely ungrateful.

Brown and Columbia!

Oh that!! yes I know about that!! My big concern is that since I want to be a lawyer I should be going to Harvard and not ND. I just feel that the pressure there would be crazy and the school spirit and general sense of happiness at ND is more apparent. I guess I just want reassurance!

@laxlawyer Have you ever seen the movie The Paper Chase? I think its a movie you would enjoy and be able to learn from.

So, I read the plot summary?? I guess you are saying the “best” school isn’t always worth it?

Interestingly, I had a nephew admitted to both Harvard and ND (among many other schools), and at a family reunion he was talking about possibly accepting ND - citing gold helmets. touchdown Jesus, Knute Rockne, etc.

My father (his grandfather), who was a very quiet, proper man, looked up from his dinner as my nephew spoke about his intention to forsake his Harvard admittance for ND, and said, “Jason, are you f_cking high?”

danstearns - ROTFLMAO!

@danstearns hahhahahhaha.

I would turn it down for Yale.

Danstearns! That must have been funny!! For me to pick ND over Harvard it has nothing to do with that. It’s more about fit and the feeling I got there after talking withbacademic advisors, coaches, Dean ofvstudies, etc.

I’d definitely go to Duke or Stanford over Havard

I would turn down Harvard for Stanford or Princeton.
