What Schools Should I Apply To?

Hi all,

I’m a current senior and applied to a couple schools early action (public states schools), but besides that have absolutely no idea where to apply.

I have a decent ACT at 34 superscored, and a 4.4/5 weighted GPA with quite a few APs.

I play two varsity sports, and have talked to some coaches about playing soccer in college. My recomendations are really good and I’m a pretty good writer so i think my supplements are also pretty good.

Ideally I’d like an openish curriculum and a more rural campus, but I’m really open to anything. Also cost is not that big of an issue so please feel free to suggest anything.

Really lost here so open to anything!

Check out Hamilton College.

Any idea what fields you’re interested in (science, tech, English/history, international relations, economics…)?

I think I want to pursue a career in the social sciences but I also like the arts (writing, film, etc.)

Try USC, NYU And Uchicago

Seconding Hamilton
Kenyon, Skidmore, Denison, Dickinson, Grinnell, St Olaf, Carleton, Pomona, Middlebury, Bates.
(Some would be reaches, some matches/safeties).

If you can accept a nice neighborhood in a city, Macalester.

Show interest.

Hamilton.

Might get a significant scholarship at St. Lawrence University in very upstate New York. Ottawa, Ontario, Canada is the closest real city. Montreal, Quebec is a couple of hours away. I think that you will find everything that you are seeking at SLU.

Wesleyan University offers filmmaking, but is not rural.

Colgate University might be a match.

Williams College is a great option for you. Bowdoin College in Maine & Davidson College in North Carolina.

Middlebury College in Vermont as well as the University of Vermont.

What is your second sport ? Have you been recruited for either sport ? Any geographical or weather preferences ?

What is your price limit and financial situation?

What is your unweighted GPA?

3.75 unweighted, I got to a very competitive high school with lots of grade deflation (multiple kids to ivies, Duke, Stanford, etc every year). My dad’s job has education benefits so tuition isn’t that big of a problem.

I’ve been recruited by Bard for soccer and have contacted other DIII coaches, my second sport is lacrosse but I am nowhere near good enough to play it in college.

With respect to social sciences, do your interests align with the study of fields such as economics and public policy, or more maybe with fields such as psychology, sociology and anthropology? Or some other combination?

I’m definitely more interest in government and IR types of courses.

Consider Hamilton’s D.C. term as you continue your search: https://www.hamilton.edu/academics/offcampusstudy/washington-program. Hamilton is also known for its writing program: https://education.seattlepi.com/university-united-states-creative-writing-courses-2243.html.

Wesleyan, Connecticut College, Middlebury and Denison are other schools I’d recommend for your interests.

If you’re think about soccer at Bard, I would consider some of the other schools in the Liberty League as Bard as won a grand total of 3 conference games in the last 5 years (3-38-1).

Hobart
Vassar
RIT
St. Lawrence
Skidmore
Clarkson
RPI
Ithaca
Union

my brother went to Colgate on a soccer scholarship, they have an amazing team (but I think you have to be recruited to play). it’s super pretty and rural-ish and a fantastic reputation! also Lehigh? Brandeis? UCONN? Michigan? If you want smaller schools then Bowdoin or Bates?

Tufts is a good match for IR and the arts.
Suburban Boston campus with a lodge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
Strong language/culture requirement, but that is important for IR
D3 sports with multiple national championships for both soccer and lacrosse.
It would be a reach, but getting support from the soccer coach would help.
Strong club soccer team

I second St. Lawrence, Skidmore, Union, and Hamilton. All of which you might be able to play soccer at.

You might want to look at Wesleyan and Kenyon for your interests as well as Vassar and Oberlin. Also Grinnell!

Bard would be a great choice for your interests but I am going to disagree with many of the assumptions above about where else you might play soccer without knowing more. Some of those programs are very competitive and if you are a senior and not on the coach’s radar, it’ll be really tough. Club, of course, is a different matter!
