What schools should I be looking at?

well, when you login into naviance you’re logging in thru your high school. so if you go to colleges, pick a college, and then acceptance rates you’ll see how many students from your school applied each year over the past decade or so and how many were accepted. does this help?

Keep in mind that I’m using the term ‘reach’ because these schools are not a guarantee for anyone. It also depends what major you are! My advice is to apply EA to as many as possible (unless you do single choice). And, apply ED to one of your Super Reaches or Reaches, whichever school you love the most.

A sample list:

Super Reach
Stanford
UChicago
Penn
Duke

Reach
Northwestern
Vanderbilt
Cornell
WashU

Match
Emory
Georgetown
UCB/UCLA
Carnegie Mellon

Low Match
USC
UVA
UNC

Safety
U of Michigan (Apply EA and in the odd case that you don’t get in during winter you can apply to another safety)

Super Safety – Ask your guidance counselor if something as safe as one of these is crucial. He or she may think its unnecessary.
U of Miami
SMU

Anyone who puts UNC (OOS in particular) as a “low match” and UMich as a safety needs to work a little on what the terms mean…
You should NOT apply ED to a super reach, it’s like throwing your one shot away. It should be a reach that’s reachable, where you’re right in the middle for stats(50% and above although for the very competitive schools being at or near top 25% is a good idea, even ED) and don’t have that extra something that will make you a real shoo-in. And if you need FA, only apply ED to a school that promises to meet 100% need.

Many school defines legacy differently.

Penn defines it as having a parent or grandparent graduate from either undergraduate or graduate school at Penn.

If you really like Penn, I’d go ED there and take advantage of legacy. I would do this even if you slightly prefer some other place. If you are only considering Penn because of the legacy, then I would hesitate.

But in general, legacy is most valuable if you apply early. At some schools, it is ONLY considered if you apply early.

As to what schools you should be looking at, are you open to considering LACs? Do you have a set of likely majors? Do you have any preferences as to leisure activities?

Sorry for the lack of responses. While I’m not sure what I would like to major in, I’m very interested in Math, Economics, Politics, and Physics, so I could major in something in one of those fields.

I would be open to going to a LAC, but in general I prefer a university-setting because I want a college experience different from my high school, which has about 450 students.

In terms of leisure activities, I am a huge foodie, so I would prefer to be in a major city. In addition, I would want to participate in intramural/club sports in college, particularly in basketball, baseball, or tennis. I might also do Model UN in college, but I’d be a bit concerned because my small high school Model UN team is the opposite of competitive.

Anyway, thanks guys! Will definitely apply to Penn ED.
