What Should I Bring to Cornell?

Clothes: sweaters, hoodies, pjs, jeans, etc, 2 winter coats

A mattress comforter (are the mattresses comfortable in the townhouses or in general?), blanket, bedsheets

alarm clock

bookbag, laptop, 2 books, pens

Getting a fridge seems like too much of a hassle

Anything else?

And where does everyone go for the little random necessities like...a nailcutter for example.

I am gonna copy the list once it is discussed all over. LOL

I thought there are refrigerators in the townhouses

I got a gift that was a Swiss Army male "manicure" set that has toenail clipper, nail clipper, cuticle pusher, tweezers, and nail scissors for hangnails.

Although when I try to find it online, I can't seem to :-\ Although you can get nail clippers and other stuff at walgreens, target, or walmart.

Also, don't forget a suit/fancy clothes for the more formal events.

octopus lamps, microwaves, and a LOT of candles.

jkjk

if you live far away and are flying in, try to be a minimalist; you can buy everyday items at Target. Also, if you have trouble deciding whether or not to bring a certain item, chances are you won't ever use it.

I'm going to copy the list to once it's done.. I believe they have the list on the classof2012 website, but I really want to know what the stuff that people really need are.. :D

a pack of condoms...orientation week is riddled with disease...

^ u must be kiddin'

You can pick up a lot of stuff on line and have it mailed to you. Best option if you ask me. If you have a car, just drive to Pyramid Mall and get something. Or have it shipped to you.

Across from pyramid mall is a dollar store where you can get plasticy items and things for a mere dollar. Hangers, trash bins, plates, yade yade yah. I would go there first and then move towards anything else.

how much formalwear do recommend for freshman girls? like how many cocktail dresses? is it necessary to bring anything for blacktie?

black dress, white dress, dress of your desire...just in case...

the only reason you need these is if you plan on being involved in the greek life...

Do you recommend that the guys bring a suit?

I always had 1 or 2 nice dresses with me...1 black cocktail dress and 1 formal dress. I used both at least twice a year.

As for guys....my friends always had at least 1 suit with them.

what are some of the events during freshmen year that I'd need a suit for?
I don't have a suit of my own at the moment and I would like to know in detail before I spend 800 dollars on one = )

They come in handy mostly for those involved with greek life....but, you could also make friends with a girl involved in a sorority and she might invite you to a formal.

There are also times when you might be surprised with an on campus interview for an internship, etc.....

I'm sure you can find a nice suit for a reasonable price....there's no need to spend $800 on a suit at this point in your life :-)

800 buckeroos for a suit?

Erm...

hahaha i actually have no idea how much a suit should cost. 800 seems to be what most of my friends paid for theirs. One friend even shelled out 2000 dollars @_@

Your friends are either tools or serious businessmen. You can easily get a decently nice suit for $200-$300 after tailoring feels. Check places out for sales like macys and such. If that's too costly, try a place like burlington coat factory (if there's one around you). Burlington will have name brand suits with very minor issues for a good price.

You'll almost definitely need a suit tailored to some degree, but tailoring fees aren't too bad. My local men's warehouse does a great job and they do it by hand, not machine which is nice.

You'll also need a dress shirt and tie (or a couple so you don't always look the same.) if you don't already have it.

And remember, always try a suit on and have people give you there opinion and take a good look at yourself in it too. A suit may look great on one person and terrible on another.

/end excessive rant about suits

Thanks for the info-
but before I buy a suit in the 300 range, would anyone be able to tell me detail how useful a good suit would be through the four years at cornell?

well, probably the most significant situation in which you'll need a suit for is an on-campus interview. many big name companies do recruit on campus and so you'll want to give your interviewers a sense of professionalism. you could always wear dress pants, a dress shirt, and a tie, but it's up to you. personally, i like going with a suit and plus...a suit has the ability to give you that added sense of confidence ;)
