I'm visiting the Harvard campus in a couple of weeks with my mom. On the other college tours I've been on, the group basically just walked around outside while the guide pointed out buildings and told us fun facts, and overzealous parents prodded him/her for info on how to get into the school.

I know that after the tour, though, you're usually allowed to snoop around the campus on your own. Is there anything we should try to see before we leave? And does anyone know if we're allowed into the dorms? I haven't seen the inside of a college dorm yet, and I'm kinda curious... :)

There’s really never an opportunity to see a dorm room since there’s always someone living in them or dorm crew is cleaning them as part of spring or fall clean-up. Typically, the only places to go are the Memorial Hall Transept (which is on the tour), the Science Center, and a few museums. Apart from that, privacy is (reasonably) pretty popular, so most locations require a Harvard ID for access, though, I know Cabot Science Library in the Science Center allows admittance to students from another educational institution.

Harvard also has a seven week summer term, before that begins there’s reunion week, and granted nothing will be happening with these dorms for roughly two weeks after summer term ends, but it would be a logistical nightmare to have two weeks worth of tours be shown dorm rooms.

Alright, thanks for the info. I just found this “virtual tour” page on the Harvard website, and it shows you the inside of a dorm room, so it’s fine if I don’t get to see one.
