What should I do about my grades?

Hello.
I have been a freshman for about a month. I consider myself a good student. I read a lot of books, I invest in the stock market, and I get really good grades.

Well, since online school was a thing, my grades have dropped. I’m getting detracted by everything (and I never used to), I have two B’s. To some people that might be nothing, but for my standards (and my dad’s standards :/) this is bad.

What should I do? I am freaking out because I wanted a 4.0 GPA and I am less than a month away from Quarter 1 report cards and I have two B’s.
Does anyone have advice on how to focus during online school?

Even if it results to me getting a bad grade, I will not cheat. So please don’t tell me to do that.

I am looking for genuine advice on studying efficiently and using my time wisely and not being distracted to things like talking to friends online, playing video games, etc.

Thanks.

Online school is hard on all students so take a deep breath and know you are not alone. A couple of Bs on first quarter progress report are not a big deal and you seem to have identified part of the problem (digital distractions) so you are on the way to finding a solution. If a couple of Bs are a no-no for you Dad maybe you can ask him for his help and support in improving them? He might have some good suggestions for you. What works (mostly) for my kids is to have different accounts on their device, one for school work and one for online interaction with friends, games etc. It also helps to set mini-goals through out the day. For example, once I’m done with my math homework I’ll chat with my friends for 10-15 minutes. Then I’ll move on to my Language Arts homework etc. I would leave the time consuming online games for the weekend or when you are completely done with your homework for the day. Also, you need to take time to go outside for a walk or other exercise that you are able to access. This will help you focus. Good luck with everything!

This helped out a lot. I will be sure to ask my dad for help, set goals, and have rewards for myself once I am done doing something.
Thank you so much.

This is an old post, but a very helpful one:

You might have to adapt some of the ideas to a covid world, but go ahead… get creative.

E-learning can be tough for both students and teachers. DD’s adjusted-for-e-learning schedule shortchanges them out of 1-2 classroom hours a week, depending on the the schedule’s weekly rotation. Over the course of a year, that leaves a lot of material that must go uncovered or the students will have to learn themselves. Thankfully most teachers tend to be helpful souls, and if you reach out to them in a timely manner, they’ll meet you half way.

I was going to suggest the same link above

What you are doing now isn’t working. So change up what you are doing.

I suspect you have three issues:

  1. Distraction
  2. Thinking how your current method of studying is all you need
  3. Grades

Distraction:
Be honest with yourself. Are you looking at your stocks? Checking out reddit? Playing a game? Chatting with your friends? Watching Netflix?
What is distracting you?

How can you prevent yourself from being distracted?

Cold Turkey?

Use an anti-distraction app? http://hughculver.com/get-focussed-13-tools-to-eliminate-distractions-today/

Use the Pomodoro method? Basically setting a time for 25 minutes where you work without interruption and then you get to take a break for 5. https://francescocirillo.com/pages/pomodoro-technique

Studying:

For tests that you didn’t do well on, can you evaluate what went wrong? Did you never read that topic? Did you not do the homework for it? Do you kind of remember it but forgot what to do? Then next time change the way you study…there may be a study skill center at your guidance office.

Do extra problems if it is a math/science issue.

Talk to your teacher about what you could improve it is an essay. Next time submit one early for feedback before the final version.

Grades:

Grades dont’ define your worth. They just show how you are doing at this point in time.
Your GPA for college is based on your final grade for the year, so you have time to improve.

Try writing out a schedule for yourself. Set defined times to work and defined time for breaks…stick to it.
