What Should I Do - Big Gap Between CR and Math

I'm an international and got 1790 in SAT overall.

But the gaps between CR, Math and Writing are pretty obvious:
CR=470, Math=760, W=560
I also have good SAT2 scores:
Math 2=770, Physics=800

So will it hurt a lot if I apply schools which need a 1800s SAT?
Will they focus on the sum of the 2(or 3?)sections or will every school review each section?

Please help.

Is English your first language? Because if not, schools take that into consideration.

It’s hard to say because although a slight weakness in english (600-ish scores) would be expected of an international, a score of 470 on your CR suggests that you don’t have a complete grasp of the english language.

Considering that you are applying to an american college that functions using english, low scores may be detrimental for you.

I would say that unless you increase your CR+ writing scores to at least 550+ on each section, you have a very low chance of getting in. 40% of kids who get a 750-ish on mathematics get into some ivy school ( I read about it online). So up those scores, and work on the toefl because it might override a low CR score.

No, English is my second language.
How much does this help?

I got 100 in (IBT)TOEFL, how much does this help?
I’m not expecting for Ivies, schools like UMich or George Tech would be fine.

hmm… it’s hard to tell for these schools because everyone is always talking about how hard it is to get into the ivies, but if you look at the statistics for Michigan and Georgia Tech, the GPA/SAT is pretty high as well.

Again, I would say you need to improve your SAT score a little bit more. I go to an international school, and everyone who ended up going to a good school (UVA, Michigan, etc. etc.) had rather high SATs. Lower than the scores posted up on College confidential, but low 2000 scores.

So… what school only consider overall scores or CR+Math?

no idea- go do your own research. Only you know which colleges you’re interested in.

Also, I just had an idea. Why don’t you work on the ACT? There’s a science portion as well as a math section, so you could probably get a low 30’s on the test (since more weight is given to subjects that aren’t english). Michigan would probably prefer it.

@ hwpan888
well, I’m not sure whether there is still time for that

of course there is, as long as you take the exam before November, you can make the Regular decision deadline.

Otherwise, I’m sure ACT specifically has students who are seniors in mind when they plan their ACT testing schedule.

BTW, where are you from? I’m an international from Rome (woot woot!)

It’s okay. I have a 140 point different in my math and critical reading score. 800 compared to 660. I am also not international. Epic fail. I plan on retaking the SAT, and you should too.

are you asian lol i heard you can do race change surgery.

Yes, I am Asian. Yes, I could perform “race change surgery,” or I could just retake it and actually prepare for the critical reading section. I prefer the latter.

Your CR score is low because you are an international student who doesn’t have English as a first language. Right now what is important is whether your TOEFL score is high enough for admission at the places where you will apply. Once you get to college here, be sure to take advantage of any Academic English ESL courses that you are placed into. Those classes will really help you master the skills you need to do well in class.

What are you talking about?

Well, I registered for Oct SAT and hope there would be a change

I’m from Beijing

I have a 100 IBT TOEFL, and will retake it in October.
