what should I do now to get into MIT

Hi, I'm an International student from China and I'm now a junior in a public school in Massachusetts. Here's my stats... I have very sucky SAT.. Can you guys tell me what should I do now to gain a chance for myself to get into MIT next year?
BTW, I'm a girl...

SAT (practice score) : M 800 R 510 W 630 (this is the superscore)
SAT II: Now have 800 in Math 2.. will take Physics and Chemistry this May

Junior classes: AP CAL BC, AP PHYSICS, AP CHEMISTRY, AP STATISTICS, ENGLISH H2, HISTORY (very low level classes for History and English, but notice I'm International student, and this is my first year in America), Business H2

Extracurricula: Just normal stuff. but i'm really into maths

Math: USAMO qualifier, PROMYS last summer (and will return this summer), then some state and regional awards
Science: State Science 5th place in Chemistry Lab, 9th place in Forensics

I think Math experience is my hook... and my weakness is obviously my SAT (and maybe I'm Chinese)....

I know my SAT verbal is way too bad for MIT.
But I will start working on it after AP test !!

Can you guys tell me that according to my stats. what LEAST SAT score is possible for me to get into MIT? (or at least give me a chance to get into)

Thank you very much!!!

Your SAT verbal score is probably ok considering you are international. I’m assuming english is not your first language. Consider taking the TOEFL. Generally, internationals take the TOEFL because the verbal SAT is too hard for them, but a 510 verbal clearly suggests that you can understand english well. I don’t know if it is different because you live here.

Maybe MITChris has some insight on this.

BTW, a SAT review book for verbal might help a lot. For Americans, a 650+ score is considered decent for the verbal. The 25%-75% range for MIT admits is probably from high 600’s to mid-700’s for verbal, I would guess.

Thanks for your reply!
I will try hard on my verbal after AP tests.
My target is 600 for verbal, 700 for writing, which will make a 2100 in total.

If I could get this score, do I have any chance to get into MIT according my other stats?

Definitely! You have great qualifications for math (USAMO Qualifier :D), just show your passion for math in your application and you definitely have a chance :)

@eak325: R u MITer 2015? Congrats!
But I still feel like my SAT is way to bad. Anyways, I need to work hard on my English

Yup
Yeah, get an SAT review book and work on improving that score, but other than that you should have a good chance.

if you are a US citizen, SAT >= 2250, you may have a good chance to get in MIT with USAMO.
For a Chinese, you have to behave much better…2250+USAMO+much more.
With SAT 2100, almost no any chances. Try some otehr schools.

@three3: I’m no a US citizen… I’m International student and this is my first year in America.
I don’t think 2250 is possible for me… though 2100 is still very difficult for me to get…

2100 is pretty decent for a non-native-speaker. Have you taken TOEFL iBT? If so, what was your score?

@Phoestre: I haven’t taken TOEFL yet… do u think TOEFL is necessary for me? cuz I’m studying here now

Any USAMO qualifier, international or not, shouldn’t hesitate to apply. As I said, a 500 is a good verbal score for a non-native speaker. Perhaps it should be indicated somewhere that you aren’t a native speaker, though they may assume that.

If you can somehow become a domestic student (Green card or w/e), it would help your chances a lot more than a few SAT scores

Not necessary but let me explain it this way… I mean if you got about 500 from SAT Crit.Reading, you can easily get above 100 out of 120 in TOEFL iBT, which is a VERY high score. Those two tests simply measure different abilities and knowladge. One is targeted for native speakers, while one is targeted for non-natives(as the name implies).

You should definitly apply.

That being said, TheDude2491 has a decent point :D

@TheDude2491: lol… I do wish I could get the green card here, but it seems impossible to me because neither of my parents are here.

A international guy got waitlisted and made a video. Pretty awesome. YouTube - My Maiden Mind

thanks! I will take a look at the video!
