Okay so for the past year or so, I have wanted to go into broadcast communications to work in television. However, I am aware of just how difficult it is to find a job in that field. But I have yet to find anything that i love as much as it. I am a junior in high school and I've been trying to figure out my major so i can start visiting schools that accommodate whatever it is I want to do. Should I take a chance and try to go into communications or should i try to find something else? I'm so stressed about this!

Communications is a broad field. It is relevant to many jobs besides TV. So you can major in it, try to find a job in it, and work in another field like marketing or PR if that doesn’t work out. You are so young to be worrying about this. Explore different fields, be open to new things. Relax.

Look at schools that offer good communications programs in areas with lots of quality connections for internships - these will be crucial in getting your foot in the door and lead to networking and other job opportunities. Attending a small school in a town setting might not offer you as many resources as a large state university in a major city. If you really love it, and are good at it, I think you should give it a solid try before forcing yourself to major in something that doesn’t excite you. Talk to professionals in the types of jobs you would like to pursue. See what helped them get to where they are. See where the climate is in terms of “hot” cities for that type of work (then look at schools in those areas). If you decide it isn’t for you, or that you don’t love it enough to take the risk, then take a variety of courses your first year of college and really explore other options. But if your love is worth the risk, don’t let yourself regret not taking the chance.
