Majoring in communications

Is it really worth the risk? My friend just introduced the idea to me and I realized being a sports broadcaster would be an awesome career. But I'm not sure how likely something like that would be.

It’s really just a crapshoot…for pretty much all journalism/broadcast journalism careers these days, it’s pretty much about luck, but going to a school with a strong alumni network and in an area with lots of opportunities helps.

If that’s one of the only jobs you can see yourself doing, then go for it, but if there are other more stable careers you like, think hard about it.

What schools are you aiming for if you chose to major in communications? I’m very interested in Journalism and I volunteer for both my school and local newspaper but I don’t think I’m going to get a degree in communications or journalism. More likely, I’ll get a degree in something like International Relations and get a job in that field and hope one day that my experience will give me an opportunity to join a news organization so I can report on international events.

So if I were you, I’d get a backup degree of something else related to sports and hope you can get a journalism job in the future. Journalism isn’t dying but it is increasingly harder in the new world to get a job - especially with subjects like sports which have always been hard to get into.
