What should I major in?

I am sixteen and a high school junior. I'm not sure what I want to go to college for. I'm number three in my class, and I just want to do something important. I love literature, physics, math, chemistry, and music. What concerns me the most is what I should major in and where I should go. I either want to do music or physics, however, Im not sure which would be the most beneficial and jow I should go about it. It would just really be nice to get some advice. Thank you.

Do you have any ideas about what colleges you want to apply to?
You don’t need to pick your major right now.

Why don’t you do both? Most colleges allow students to pick 2 majors. Or why not Major in Physics and Minor in Music? You still have time to figure out your major. I didn’t figure out mine until my senior year.

Engineering is one of the few majors you shouldn’t choose more than 1 (definitely not, better to finish faster and secure a job advisers tell you!) because the course load often will be over the university’s minimum graduation requirement.

–If you like Physics and Math–go for the engineering in the field you enjoy most. If you have a Science Olympiad, they have a ton of events in diverse fields in which I think you should check out if you have one / (start one?). Circuit lab for the electrical engineers, compound machines for the mechanical engineers, chemistry lab for the chemists, and much more. I’m a supporter of engineering for a ton of reasons such as the versatility of majors / plenty of job opportunities, etc so you should check that out!

Physics = easier to find a job

See, the problem is my parents are making me know. And shatever college I go to depends on what I major in. UGA is the most economically secure because I can live at home and go to UGA and get in-state and I’m likely to get a gpod scholarship. And my dad thinks if I go anywhere else, I’ll be too busy working and studying, and I’ll get tired to easily (he says this every time I bring up going anywhere else.) I just, I need to know. I looked at Ivy League schools and my dad just laughs. I was also looking at columbus state for music, and he also thinks that’s stupid. And I just need him not to laugh at me for what I want to be. He wants me to major in music, but I want to major in physics which he thinks entirely lacks job oppurtunity besides becomkng a professor.

Music = more jobs??
If there are local internships–research that, you can engineer (quite universal depending on the field) and save money living at home (which is not a stupid idea).

I don’t want to rush you into a decision, but I think your parents are on something when they want you to choose now because many think it’s a good idea to go off to an expensive college–to find out what they want to do-- and then play the major switching game which may throw away a ton of money. Random engineering bias here: a lot of the time you’ll get to take introductory courses in engineering that all majors have to take and those will give you an indicator of what specific field you want to go into too before you get too deep.

–If you want to teach in physics, I don’t see a problem with that (which likely might be the case), it sort of depends on your connections with people such as being a TA/LA and you’re well on your way.
