I am leaving Thursday morning for Chicago. I am doing an overnight visit at Northwestern Thursday night and an overnight visit at UChicago Friday night. Being from the south, I am not super familiar with the weather in Chicago. I do know, however, that it will be in the 20s and very windy. What kind of clothes should I pack for the trip? I don't know if I need to pack leggings to go under jeans, under armor gear, etc. Any advice?

It is not that cold! Chicago is called The Windy City because of Congressmen who talked too much, not because of the wind. Nre York has stronger winds than Chicago.

That said, NU and UofC are both on Lake Michigan where it tends to by windy compared with just a few miles inland. There is an inch or two of snow on the ground in some places. It didn’t get above freezing today but I have put on gloves only once this winter.

I’d rather have Chicago weather than an Atlanta or Houston summer.

Chicago forecast:
Thurs high 17, low 10, SW winds 18 mph, 30% chance of snow
Fri high 23, low 19, NW winds 18 mph, 50% chance of snow

Thurs & Fri will be cold & a bit windy but not unbearable. If you’re not accustomed to cold I’d bring long silk underwear (tops & bottoms), a good winter coat, hat with something to cover your ears, scarf, and warm gloves or mittens. Also appropriate footwear, probably boots of some sort that will keep your feet dry & warm in a few inches of snow but that you won’t be embarrassed to wear indoors. Good luck!

Go to Chicago Tribune web-site and check weather forecast; weather can vary widely here. 50 degree swings do occur. However, generally for winter you need: down jacket hopefully covering your butt, waterproof shoes w/some insulative quality, fleece or lined leather gloves, and a close-fitting hat that covers your ears. Lakefront area can be windier than bulk of Chicago. Dressing in layers can help. Indoor winter temperatures can vary from too hot to cool and drafty. Tinkering w/thermostat is common.

This winter has been very mild thus far, though it’s 22 F today.
