I’m an incoming freshman. I like computer science, mathematics, statistics, and other natural sciences in general. I’ve known that I want to do something related to analytics and “big data” for quite some time, but my biggest ambition is in entrepreneurship. I’m officially listed as an incoming computer science major at my school, but I’m curious whether I should try to do a double major in mathematics, business analytics, or business administration. Or a minor in statistics.
Of course, a second major in business administration seems like I’d only be gaining knowledge that I could learn independently. Mathematics seems like the most useful second major if I were to actually do one. As does statistics. What are your thoughts?
If you want to do big data and analytics, statistics and/or math are your best choices, with significant study (perhaps a major or minor) in computer science. Business analytics might work, but you’ll have to check the program at your school - some business analytics programs don’t teach enough deep math and stats to prepare you to do big data/data science. They only teach you basic/intermediate stuff.
Entrepreneurship means that you start your own business, but you have to have something to start it with.
