What should I take for my 1yr req for art in highschool?

I’m a sophomore this year, and I’m thinking of taking either AP Art History or Drawing and Painting for my 1yr req. I’m not sure which one to pick, or which year to take the art class. Here are my schedules for junior and senior year (there are a max of 6 classes):

Junior:

  1. AP Literature
  2. AP Environmental Science
  3. Pre-Calculus
  4. Spanish 3
  5. AP US History
  6. ART CLASS HERE (OR NEWSPAPER)

Senior:

  1. AP Language
  2. Marine Ecology (I don’t plan on majoring in science, but this gives an AP-like GPA bump)
  3. Calculus (I think it’s an A/B class)
  4. Spanish 4
  5. AP US Government
  6. ART CLASS HERE (OR NEWSPAPER)

What do you think of my schedule? I definitely want to take Newspaper in either junior or senior year, and an art class (either AP Art History or Drawing and Painting) the other year.

  • Which year should I do Newspaper? And which year for either AP Art History OR Drawing and Painting?
  • Is junior or senior year better for an extra AP class like AP Art History? I would like to take AP Art History, but would it be too hard with the other AP classes (especially w/ another history class like AP US/AP Gov)? (If it’s hard, that’s why I’m also thinking about taking Drawing and Painting.)
  • Any helpful info on my other classes would be nice.

Sorry for all the questions, but I would really like to know! Thanks for whatever you can answer!

Did you take Journalism? At my school we have to take Honors 10 Journalism to do newspaper, but that doesn’t count as a VPA or art credit. My school is even more irritating because it requires stupid classes like health along with two years of arts… I’m taking a art class junior and senior year… That includes theater, band, choir, art classes, and some more. Ask your counselor about which classes count towards that credit.

I highly recommend the AP Art History. Most colleges will accept credit for this class and should get you out of 2 sememsters of an art related GE.

@Anish14 No, my school doesn’t require Journalism before taking Newspaper (I’m not even sure we have a Journalism class, either). Aw, that sucks. :frowning: I hate high school reqs. I could have saved myself 2 years of PE and 1 year of “College and Career Planning” and Health altogether. I could be taking the classes I /actually/ want to take.

You gotta take that ceramics! It gets pretty erotic in that class when everyone is using the spinning wheel with their clay

Definitely take AP art history. Junior year. That gives you a GPA bump since thats all the colleges get pretty much is through jr. year. Also, it IS widely used to replace the art general requirement in college.

If AP Art History fulfills the art requirement at your school (it does not at mine), I would recommend that you take that over drawing and painting. Kill 2 birds…

I don’t think there is much difference in which you take as a junior vs. senior.

Take AP Art History if you can!
