What should one do over the course of the year to self-study an AP exam?

I'm probably going to use these guides
AP US History - Amsco
Ap psych - Barron's
AP human geography - Barron's
AP Environmental science- PR

Read through the review books as many times as possible and take as many practice tests as you can.

Summer - read the prep books for the “hard” AP classes
During the course of the year - Do well in class
January to Feb - Start reviewing stuff for the “hard” AP classes
march - april - start the practice tests and other classes
may - hardcore preppage!!!

Oh I’m not taking a class for any of these APs. I would be independently studying them along with my 3 ap classes I’m taking at school. I heard ap psych is really easy and one could get a 5 just by reading barron’s in one week. I heard the same for human geography and environmental science except maybe longer than a week to study? US History I would study really hard on.

Whatever you decide to do, do it three times.

AP US History: if your school offers APUSH as a class, ask a friend what they are doing everyweek, try to keep up your reading. Falling behind can be a major problem in apush, as theres simply too much content to cram.
Ap psych: I’d start reading barrons during winter break and make some flashcards. The test is pretty easy.
AP human geography: Same as psych, extremely easy test
AP Environmental science: Although 1 semester would be enough for this, since you are self-studying 3 other tests, it may be a good idea to start early. Unlike psych and human geo, env sci is more concept than pure memorization. I would self-study this 1st semester and review it a bit on a weekly basis 2nd semester.

Start studying for US history during the summer and also buy Crash Course. For the rest of them, just start studying around February or March.

Just try to cram as much doing the summer as you can.

This site has good practice tests and has a diagnostic test as well. Pretty helpful

Have a plan like what the other posters have said and STICK TO IT. This is probably the hardest part of the whole thing.

Oh and don’t fall behind in other classes as well.
