do some summer jobs look better than others? It makes sense to me that working at a library looks better than working at taco bell, but some say that work experience is work experience and they mainly want to see that you have dedication and responsibility? Opinions?

98% of colleges don't care in the slightest. I'd say of the 2% who would even look at what the actual job is, they only care the slightest bit.

Don't worry about it. Get the best paying, most fun job you can.

and actually, I think (just for the thought of it) that Taco Bell would be a better looking job, just because it provides more "work experience" rather than sitting on your butt shelving books ;)

Ya, they do care quite a bit. It shows your independence and maturity. If you read any college admission's book written by an actual member of an ADCOM they will talk about how impressive it is when kids are responsible enough to hold a job and maintain high grades/ECs. It shows a different level of dedication beyond simple text book. They are only making like 40k a year; how do you think they feel about reading about a kid who was given everything and only studied and a kid who had to hold down a job to help his family?

work at an ice arena and drive a zamboni and cool stuff like that :)

Get a paid internship.. =)

Amen. Or even unpaid, but doing something, uh, useful, looks better than fast food.

lol...paid internship in hs...isnt that an attainable goal! seriously, how many of these actually exist for high schoolers? i worked in fast food and still do on the weekends(mcd's). i know the pompous prep school kids think fast food is useless, but I think its very useful in work ethic development, social skills in a work environment, and ability to adapt in stressful situation. I'm telling you, working at McD's on the morning of father's day, with about 30 ppl in line all wanting there damn food is very stressful. You just dont experience these kind of situations in many places while in hs.

yeah, internships for hs are hard to find... and it's too late anyway for me, since this is my last summer before applying
but thanks for all opinions, even tho they seem to differ somewhat

To summarize: any work experience is useful, absolutely.

However you don't have to worry about Taco Bell or Walmart or Library or life guard at the pool, etc. They're all equal in adcoms' eyes.

'08holla: many extremely gifted and viable applicants to the top schools HAVE to work menial jobs to help make ends meet for their families. The adcoms aren't going look funny at this whatsoever. And like I said, this might come into play with only the most ultra select schools anyways. 98% of colleges won't even care.

To the OP, enjoy your job, enjoy your summer.

Good luck to you.

its hard enough to find a job. After a month and a half of searching and applying, I might actually get a job at subway.
