What tense should my Common App essay be in?

<p>Hi,</p>

<p>So for my essay, I am retelling a story from a few years ago. Then, in the end of the essay I describe how the story is relevant to me today and why it matters to me. As of right now, I have the first part written in the past tense and the end written in the present tense. I know in a typical essay written for school this should not be done. What about my Common App essay?</p>
