What the * do I major in??!

Hey all,

I just transferred into G.S. and am entering as a 3rd year student. I was planning on majoring in Financial Economics because I thought it might give me a leg up if I wanted to go into the financial services industry. I'm not sure whether I want to go that route and work in finance, or if I want to go to law school. The current crisis/recession that the law industry and law schools are going through is compelling me to keep my options open.

Will majoring in Financial Economics as opposed to Economics be really that much more helpful/useful? If I really want to work in Finance, would I be better off majoring in something more quantitative? And if so, what?

Law doesn’t require any particular classes, so you can major in anything without limiting yourself in that direction. As to the financial industry, I hear they often hire physics majors, so something quantitative could be a way of finding out if you like it.

If you want Finance, you don’t have to major in something more quantitative but in a competitive job mkt, if you excel in higher mathematics and quantitative courses, you’ll stand out against other “econ” or “business administration” majors. Load up on those math or accounting or quant classes!
