What time of job do you have as an undergrad?

Freshman-normal job
Sophomore- normal job
Junior- Intern, PT data analyst job
Senior- n/a

Is it normal to have a “starter”(office assistant, receptionist, sales, etc) job when you’re in college? I have a handful of friends (incoming senior) with internships at Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, mmcann. So I just want to get some weight as to where I should be at. Is junior year the time you should get a part time job/ impacting intern?? Maybe earlier or later? What are your experiences? Or thoughts?

I don’t know specifics with business, but I feel as though most meaningful jobs/internships take place during the summer.

Im a senior CS and math major. During the school year, I have only worked since freshman year as a grader for the CS department (similar to a TA in that I grade hw, etc, but I don’t actually interact with the students). I interned this summer as a research mathematician for the federal government, and the summer before, as a software developer. I was offered a full time job for when I graduate that I applied for while I was interning.

I wouldn’t compare myself to my friends.

I had an internship the summer between my junior and senior year of HIGH SCHOOL. You can get internships anytime if the opportunity presents itself. I had friends that worked at Walmart freshman year and some that landed internships with law offices and stuff. I didn’t even have a job

I’d say by the time junior and senior year roll around, you ought to be looking for internships but don’t sweat it if you’re struggling to find one.

From the time I was 16 until 2 weeks before I started teaching high school I worked in a local seafood restaurant. I went from busgirl to hostess to waitress.

The whole crew of us hung out together-- we carpooled to school, had a summer house in the Hamptons and a ski house upstate-- it was a wonderful time!!
