What to bring to your dorm at move-in

Hi there. I was wondering if there was a list of "essentials" that you need to bring with you when you move in. I doubt any of us want to show up forgetting to bring something important.

Observed frequently forgotten items: hangers & extension cords

My personal nomination for must have: duct tape

Communicate with your room mate about large items: fridge, microwave, TV (if you choose to have them)

Bring a pair of scissors or a swiss army/utility knife or have it in an easy accessible place. So you can open boxes and assemble stuff on move in day.

how about a swiss army knife for safety? haha. jk, SBR.
i'm in blackwell, and the rooms i hear are puny. are there desks and chairs in there already? or do we need to bring them? and what about the closets? no doors? i need HELP

Yes, each room will have set of a bed with a mattress, a desk, a shelf that goes above the desk, a chair, a trashcan (sometimes with bags), and a chest of drawers per person. I hear Belltower also has a wardrobe of some kind to make up for the lack of closets idk if that's still true.

As for closet doors, Blackwell and Randolph doesn't have them. It's basically a semi-enclosed partition with a shelf and a bar for hanging stuff. For other dorms, I know Aycock has full walk-in closets with doors, one or two per room depending on location.

Oh, and there should be at least 1 mirror per room.

The closets in Blackwell and Randolph are on either side of the door to the room. No, there are no closet doors. The ceilings are REALLY high. Plastic crates stacked 2 high and, I'm thinking 3 across?, work well on the closet shelves to organize and store stuff. Individual styles vary, but those canvas hanging shelves are handy in the closets. I think that B&B call them sweater storage, but they are great for towels, shoes, anything you want and make of use vertical space.

are there bulletin boards in the room or should we bring those?

No bulletin boards if you mean those cork/magnetic boards where you use thumb tacks or magnets. You are gonna need to bring one if you want one.

if u r in an non a/c dorm...definitely bring fans

Yeah, forgot about the fans...at least 3 split between 2 people for a double. 2 personal fans and one window fan.

Oh and if you are driving to campus the fans would be one thing I'd buy at home and bring with you. There is usually a run on fans in the first week or so as all the freshman get to their rooms and discover that it can get hot without some airflow.

Of course if you aren't driving then you are going to have to buy one in Durham. If that is the case, I'd see if you can't make that one of your first purchases. Other items that might run out you can get later but if you have to wait on a fan you won't be happy. (plus you don't really need it after about a month or so)

Definitely fans...

... and your thinking-cap?

i had 7 fans in the room...i still wish there had been more.
