What to bring

Here's some things for the grad gift list or pack list...
1. Rain coat - the campus is huge! You will get drenched walking in those storms. North Face and Columbia make some cool looking rain jackets. If you start looking now, you can also find some at TJ Maxx for cheap.
2. Microfleece - It was FREEZING up there last week. Get a microfleece jacket (that you can wear under the rain coat, which is also a superior wind breaker) and gloves.
3. Bike and U-Lock - the campus is huge! Did I already say that <wink> And, when you sleep through your alarm during finals week you will need to ride like a bat out of hell! Don't get an expensive one as those get stolen. Beach cruisers are great since the campus is flat, but don't get a Wal-Mart one as apparently the rims get dented really easy. Start checking craigslist now as they sell out fast - got quality one for $75. Bring extra tires.
4. Window fans - no AC in the dorms. Record temp this fall was 105 degrees!
5. Alarm clock - remember that "bat out of hell" ride comment. You need something for a back-up.
6. Sick Kit - Emergen-C, zinc tablets, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, extra toothbrushes, thermometer, etc. You are going to set a record for most head colds if you live in the dorm. FYI: You can get super cheap Tylenol, etc. at the health center.</wink>

As I think of more, I'll post.

thank you! very helpful of you to remind us what to bring to the new school. :)

Occct you never fail to be so incredibly nice. All your posts and threads now, exactly what we need.

You know I’ve been thinking about it, and a bike sounds like the perfect thing to have. Will get me exercise at least, and travel fast down that long stretch of street to south campus,

now i just need to find one under 150 >>,

tutu,
A bike under $150 shouldn’t be a problem. Nearly anything will do, with a mountain bike you probably won’t even need to switch gears. Get the basic tools for changing a tire, too.

You’ll be amazed how much time it takes to get from class to class. If you’ve only got 30 minutes, you’ll be glad you’ve got a bike. Your classes will not be all in one area; especially your first year you’ll be zig-zaggin’ across campus.

How big would you say the campus is?

Don’t forget a “Strong Beach” t-shirt

@Nikolnicole- The campus is fairly large. Although, I’m not sure what I’d compare it to in order to give you an accurate picture. You should try to visit to get a feel for it yourself.

@oct2010: hey, when you appled for dorms, do you remember how late/early it was when you applied? because i just applied the 17th, and im nervous 17 days is enough to be put on a waiting list. did you get an email or anything after you applied and sent in the $400 ?

Hello HBemily,
My son is a freshman. He applied for housing the day it opened. Originally, he wanted a single and anticipated they’d be the first to fill. In the end, he opted for a double. There were actually vacant rooms first semester and the housing app is still advertised on their website, so I definitely would not be worried.

After you fill out the app and pay, you’ll get an email stating what date and time you can do the roommate selection.

Wondering how early housing fills up? DD has still not heard from admissions. She checks everyday and it just says that an initial review has taken place.

Do you also have to send in or mail in the housing license contract BEFORE they consider you for a bedspace? Or do you simply wait to send it in AFTER they have given you a bedspace?

Don’t forget nice workout clothing if you’re planning on using the rec center a lot, girls there does motivate me to exercise more, ahahahha, lol.
