What to do if applying to 2 colleges via common app but they require different things

I want to apply to Cornell U and JHU via the common application online ... but JHU says that the personal essay isn't required:

Students applying as transfers to Johns Hopkins are required to answer question 3 below. The Common Application essay is not required of transfer applicants.

This is what it says on the actual application:

Your application is incomplete if you do not complete your essay. Please do not submit online until your entire application is complete. The personal statement helps us become acquainted with you in ways different from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will demonstrate your ability to organize thoughts and express yourself. We are looking for an essay that will help us know you better as a person and as a student. Please write an essay (250-500 words) in response to the questions below:

Please reflect on your reasons for considering a transfer. Why are you transferring? Why was your most recent college not a good fit? What do you know now that you didn't know during your first college search process?

So this is what I typed into the box:

Please refer to transfer essay in supplement.

However, Cornell doesn't say that the Personal Essay above is not required so I guess it is required in addition to the Why Cornell essay...so what to do?

Submit the Common App as is to JHU... then write an essay for Cornell (i.e. edit your Common App). So you'll be sending in different versions of the Common App, one with the essay, one without.

Though, it says it's not required. They DO NOT say they don't want it. And since they don't say they don't want it, then you might as well send it, because a good college essay can do wonders for the app.

Alright I decided to go with fhimas' suggestion in the end, cause I don't know how to send the common app to 2 colleges separately ... submit them at different times??

Nope - you can submit them at the same time.

.... I think up to 9 at the same time...
