What to do if Deferred: NEW POLL ADDED!

didn't harvard itself say (in the instructions to their app) that about 200 or so of the deferred students will be selected regular decision...i think i saw that somewhere

I don't see it.

So, I spoke with my counselor today and he told me about his discussion with the admissions rep. Basically all she said was that this years applicant pool was more talented than those of previous years and that they had to defer many people with near perfect credentials. When he asked her if there was any specific reason why I didn't get in, she couldn't think of any. Then, he told me, she proceeded to say that I had a "very good chance" of getting in RD. What this means, none of us really know. It could mean that I actually do have a strong shot of getting in, but I'm thinking it means that I just have as good a chance as anyone else as anyone else with a 1500+, tons of ecs, music, and year round sports(basically everyone who applied has these). In addition, she said that of the 3,000 people who were deferred, 100 will get in RD(I know, thats a tough pill to swallow) But she anticipates that they will receive well over 20,000 regular applicants, 700 of which will be selected. This is a roughly similar acceptage percentage. Anyways, thats bascially what she told him in a nutshell. If anyone has any questions about more specific things she might have mentioned, ask and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks

Ok, in the Harvard instructions manual for the application (right before the common application in the book they send in the mail), on page two, there is a section on Early Action (begins towrards the bottom of the first column). I'll copy the relevant excerpt below:

"In each of several recent years, Harvard has admited between 2000 and 2100 applicants total. Of these 900 to 1200 were admitted in mid-December and -- reflecting early candidates' strength -- antoehr 85 to nearly 250 early applicants were admitted in the spring after having been deferred in mid-December. There is no incentive whatsoever for EA colleges to admit weaker candidates early and then have to reject stronger RD candidate. Diminishing the quality of the student body would be antithetical to the goals of any institution."

So, 85 to 250 of the 3000ish deferred. Now, that's a pretty big range, who's to say how many of the deferred kids they'll take this year.

Good luck to you guys, I know I'll need it for RD!

Amen to that!

I don't know, my counselor told me that the admissions representative said that in total, they expect to receive 17,000 applications for the regular decision round and will accept approximately 2,000 for an approximately 11% acceptance rate (not an approximately 3% acceptance rate as Keynes has stated that his counselor told him). I don't know, this is extremely fishy.

Lets all spy on the harvard adcoms and find out what rotten sneaky tricks they're up to now...

Here's my guess, and the basis for it:

I assume there will be 1,640 slots filled in the class of 2009.

885 were admitted EA, and I estimate that 91% (last year's rate) of them will matriculate, for a total of 805.

Thus, there remain 835 slots to be filled from the combined EA deferred/RD pool.

Assuming a conservative 2% growth in RD applicants, there should be about 16,100 of them, which, combined with about 3,000 accepting deferral from the EA round, make for a total pool of 19,100 of them.

I assume that about 1,175 of them will be admitted to net 835 matriculants, given last year's 72% RD yield rate.

This translates into a 6.2% acceptance rate for those in the combined RD/EA deferred pool.

Assuming EA deferreds will be accepted at the same rate as RD applicants, this translates into 186 offers of admission for those EA deferreds.

(If the number of RD applicants is 17,000 rather than 16,100 as I project, the acceptance rate for the EA deferred/RD pool will decline to 5.9%, and there will be roughly 177 EA deferreds offered admission. For there to be 17,000 RD applicants, the number would have to increase by 7.2% over last year's number, just as the EA pool did. This is possible, but not likely, IMHO.)

Ah - empirical data :)

In any case, we know that we will only have a 5-10% chance as EA deferred applicants in the regular round. It's now even more of a crapshoot!

can someone call and inquire about this? For some reason I don't feel like getting up from my other applications and calling them

are we deferees allowed to just send them a completely upgraded app including common app, supplement, resume, essay, EVERYTHING? I'm not saying I'm gonna do a new one, its just that there are many minor mistakes on everything I did that kinda shows carelessness and now that I'm using that common app for my other schools i realized what a s****y job i did 2 months ago.

I keep on forgetting to call them

I remember someone on this board first suggested the idea

Looking back, I really think I got deferred not because I was unqualified but because i really misrepresented myself on my app

really, wouldn't it be great if we deferrees can just resend our app (without changing anything major of course) so that we can get rid of the stupid things like spelling errors (I have at least a couple)

Anyway seriously, can someone please call because I keep forgetting every day to call them

Me too. I'd like to rewrite parts of my essays, and rearrange things on my resume to highlight my "accomplishments."

Did anyone ever call to find if we can resend our applications? The offices closed yesterday... if not, I think I am just gonna resend the Common App anyway- can't hurt, can it

i'm not too sure. i'll read an excerpt from their website:

"If you have any changes to your Common Application after you submit it, please notify the Admissions Office by writing. DO NOT resend the common application"

can I resend my resume though?

also am I allowed to resend a cd?

I am pretty sure Langston Hughes did not mean getting deferred from Harvard ella05

(that was random!)
I was just being facetious, attempting to take a more...sardonic view of deferral. I know he was speaking of a much more serious subject- I'm sorry if I offended.

if i've updated my supplementary essay since i initially sent it in EA, can i send in the revised copy? (i found a typo and have just reworked it)

if i've updated my supplementary essay since i initially sent it in EA, can i send in the revised copy? (i found a typo and have just reworked it)

probably too late.
