Ok, so I've been going through all the forums and haven't found a single all-encompassing thread on what to do if you get deferred from your EA or ED school. Could everyone give me (and the rest of the CC community) some guidance? Should I e-mail my adcom? Should my guidance counselor call him up? Should I send in more essays or recs? What's the best plan of action?

Your GC should get in touch with your adcom and try to find out if there was a specific weakness in your app that can be addressed (such as by pulling up your girst semester grades to stellar levels). You might submit another rec if appropriate, from someone who could perhaps speak to your greatest strengths or your perceived weakness. You could send a brief note or carefully proofread e-mail to the adcom reiterating your interest in the school (and perhaps) what you can contribute to it. See what your GC says, but this is all standard procedure and sometimes works. But also keep in mind that most deferred students do not gain admission in the RD round, so make sure you have apps in to other schools you really like and that those apps are as well prepared and presented as your ED or EA one was (or even better if possible).

I agree with mattmom. If the GC finds out some concrete information, you may be able to address the weaknesses in your application. But, aside from an email or letter restating your interest in the college, there is not much to do right now. Keep in mind that RD applications will not be read until February or even March. This means that you have a chance to submit new materials through January: a new (and perhaps higher) GPA; higher SAT scores from the January administration; perhaps more awards and recognitions. However, repeated statements of interest unaccompanied by new information will not help your cause.

In the meantime, keep in mind that there are only ten days left to submit applications to other colleges. This is where you should focus your energies right now. Make sure all your recs, transcripts, scores, school profile, and so forth are ready to be sent out or have been sent out (together with application fee); and work on those application essays.

I always found it interesting that some guidance counselors are ably to pry information out of the admissions office. I had no such luck when my daughter was deferred years ago, and I doubt I would have any this time around either.

Where was your daughter deferred from, futureadcom?

As a deferree, I feel that you have a week to mope over EA deferral and then you should finish your other colleges.

My daughter was deferred from Boston College and we were shocked, though she did get in RD....so there is hope for you at Georgetown I am sure.
