My daughter was given a set of table and chairs by a coworker because my daughter had bought a condo and needed furniture.
It’s now been 5 years and she needed the space so she asked me to move it out with the idea of donating it.
I went to several places and no one wants it but I think it’s beautiful and with the right care and repair, it still has life in it. Facebook Marketplace has been flaky
My husband wants it taken to the dump, ASAP. I have to get it out.
I can’t bear that. Someone needs it. Any suggestions?
It’s from a company called Bedell. It’s a French country style.
I just recently moved and donated good used furniture to Habitat for Humanity Restore if there is one in your area.
Great Idea!
Call your Habitat Restore first! We have 2 locally - one takes only brand new, or very high end stuff but the other takes anything.
Goodwill? That’s nice than some of the furniture I’ve seen in local stores…
Goodwill wouldn’t take it @Jolynne_Smyth. (Neither would Salvation Army because the upholstery is torn. Otherwise, it’s in good shape and strong/heavy for the age.
I have given away a number of items on Craigslist.
In my experience, you can take something that costs $200 new and try to sell it for $20 and you might eventually get someone to take it in a week or two. You give it away for free and it is usually gone the same day that you list it. This is not completely perfect though. I have had a small number of items not be taken.
Can you tell us what city you are in or near? One of us might take it.
You can’t expect charities like Goodwill or Salvation Army to repair furniture. Just like you shouldn’t donate dirty or torn clothing.
I worked for a shelter and people used us as a dump.
Either have the furniture repaired and then donate, or take it to the dump.
Thanks! I don’t want any money from this. I just wanted it to go to a “crafter” or someone who would appreciate the lines and the workmanship involved.
I know, “beggars can’t be choosers”. I think I’m going to try the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore since they tend to have a lot of people searching for antiques there. I’ve put the offer up on my Facebook page. If not, then my last resource is the dump, which is less than a mile from there.
Definitely call the Habitat store. They made me send photos of all items I wanted to donate and then let me know which ones they would take. Some stores are pickier than others as noted.
Our town has a “buy nothing” Facebook group. The idea is to not toss useful items and ask if anyone has one to give away before buying something new. People post everything, from cans of soda they didn’t like to appliances, clothes, and, yes, furniture. I know that set would be scooped up quickly.
Do you have Nextdoor where you live? I’ve purchased/sold things there (and also given away stuff).
I’m pending approval for the local Buy Nothing Facebook group.
I’m confused - did you try FB Marketplace?
Sounds like you don’t care about getting money for it. So Habitat, a free group or putting it out at your curb with a “free jist needs love” sign sound like your best bets.
The chairs are cool. Someone might take them and mix match them with a different table - or vice versa.
Just offer it on a local Facebook Buy Nothing page. Or post it for free somewhere else. Someone will take it.
What about Freecycle? I’ve also posted on my own FB page which goes only to friends and friends of friends. Have gotten rid of some things easily that way.
We’ve had a problem with Marketplace in this area, per the daughter and her friends-and the neighbors around here, so I asked, instead, to be part of the Local Buy-Nothing Facebook group. I am awaiting approval.
Going to try Habitat and Buy-Nothing group to see if anyone wants the items tomorrow.
My son just started his job and needed furniture for 1 year. Everything was from the buy nothing group. Lots of young professional depending on your local moving up and want to get rid of their ikea etc stuff. Also Facebook market place… But try a local antique store also. That’s a nice piece… But would be surprised if that takes more then a day to give away.
You’re in my general area, iirc. It’s very unlikely you can quickly find someone who wants to restore old furniture unless it’s valuable. There’s just so much of it!
I looked at JFS - they stopped taking furniture a few years ago but their web site says: “ If you would like to connect to another charitable furniture donation program, we recommend the San Diego Rescue Mission, AMVETS, San Diego Habitat for Humanity, or The Salvation Army.”
Also Father Joe: https://my.neighbor.org/take-action/donate-goods/
Thanks! I’m going to try any agency that is willing to take it with its’ bumps and bruises.
