What to expect on the actual SAT Chemistry exam?

I have prepared for SAT Chemistry using the Barron’s Subject Test guide and practice papers. While I have been scoring in the 74-76 / 80 region (which according to Barron’s is 780-800) I did find myself a bit stumped when doing the official subject test (from blue book) and ended up with a 75 (which is 760) :frowning:

So, in the real deal, how different is the real test from Barron’s practice tests? What topics (and from where) should I hence prepare further from the Barron’s course content? And how harsh is the actual test curve? Any source for accurate papers?

Thank you for using your experience to help me on this one. The test is in less than a week!

The Barron’s practice tests are generally quite a bit harder than the actual subject test. Have you taken AP Chemistry at your school? The class prepares you well and the subject test is easier than the AP test. I managed a 750 on the SAT subject test even after getting a 3 on the AP test and scoring in in low 60s on the Barron’s practice tests.

As for the curve, it changes every year, but according to the College Board’s data for 2012 high school grads taking the chemistry subject test, an 800 is in the 91st percentile, which means either a generous curve or very well prepared students.

I think you should be fine, just keep studying and do what you would normally do before a big test. Good luck!

@ShoveAChef It’s not that the Barron’s tests are harder – They are usually not very well written and don’t correspond to the actual thing.

Reviving this thread.

I’m taking this in June 2015. I am currently using the Kaplan book to prep; how realistic are the practice tests?
I’m not sure what to expect; there seems to be a lot of questions in the Kaplan book on random facts that you either know or you don’t know.

I only have one “official” practice test from the big books of subject tests.

I am currently taking AP Chemistry.

The official guide has the most accurate exams. I did find that on the actual exam there were many random facts that I either knew or didn’t know.

@Matt846 Thank you for responding! Are there any other past/sample exams available other than the one in the complete SAT Subject Test book?

Not for chem I don’t think sorry

I’m taking the test while in Chem H…oops
