I was recently accepted into UCLA and I am so excited! However, UCLA does not have a business school or even an undergraduate business major. They have a Business-Economics Degree (which is what I’ve been accepted too), but that is more of an economics degree with some accounting. I’m hoping to pursue a degree in marketing post-graduation and I was wondering: what should I major in at UCLA to best prepare me for jobs in marketing post-graduation? I was thinking of majoring in business-economics and maybe minoring in psychology, but I am unsure what to do. They also have majors in communications and sociology. Would it be in my best interest to transfer into one of those?
No, you haven’t. Look again at the ucla website. You have been admitted as a pre-biz-econ major; you will not be in the actual major until you pass the required classes with the specified gpa and fill out the form to be admitted to the major. Note that these requirements include 2 quarters of engineer-level calculus.
Unlike the other comment that did not answer your question (but did have an agenda to humble you), I would say that you might want to look at studying both economics and psychology, as marketing is really a combination of the two. But it really does depend on what aspect of marketing you have in mind. There is market research and there is social media or branding. It is such a broad category. The best advice though is to be well read, inquisitive and a life-long learner. I hope that helps. My son has the same interest but is not yet at college level (high school junior).
Thanks so much for the reply! I am planning on double majoring in either biz-econ and psychology or biz-econ and communication studies. Which degree do you think would be more useful if I want I am interested in social media and branding?
