Hi CC world! I posted this question a couple months ago but am still super indecisive about my future and what the correct major path is for me. As of now, I really see myself getting into the marketing field (the social media/branding side of things) after I graduate. As UCLA doesn’t have a marketing degree or even a business degree, I was wondering what you all would recommend I major in to set myself up for the best post-graduate success. Along with getting a job in marketing, I plan on going to grad school at some point after I graduate. Right now I’m in between communication studies and business economics/ regular economics, but if there are any other majors that would be beneficial for my career path, I’m all ears :). For me the pros and cons of each major seem to be:
Business-Economics/ Economics:
Pros:
-top 15 economics programs in country
-more “quantitative” degree
-more flexibility in career choices (business wise- I know communications majors can enter an abundance of different fields, however, if I decided sometime throughout college that I wanted to be an accountant or go into finance, that is more doable with an economics degree)
Cons:
-Hard major (so potentially lower gpa)
- I feel like marketing fits more into the education requirements of the communications degrees (I’ve looked at some of the class requirements online), especially the public relations/branding side of things, which is what I’m interested in
Communication Studies:
Pros:
-Top 15 communications program in country
- Like I said earlier, I think this degree fits what I want to study more
-The class requirements interest me more than the economics/biz-econ classes do
Cons:
-stigma that communications degrees don’t count for anything (I’ve heard this from many many people/online everywhere, even TV shows poke fun at comm majors)
-The major is hard to get into, so if I don’t maintain a high enough gpa, I won’t even make it into the major
-For some reason I feel like a economics degree would look better for grad school (business grad school), but that’s just my initial thoughts, I’ve never heard this or anything so I could be wrong
Please help me as I’d like to change my major if necessary at orientation.
