right now, i am decided on math 54, econ 101b (this is for the prereq for econ major), and i have to finish my reading and writing requirement.

i know reading and writing is first priority...but what about between 54 and 101b? these are my main classes..i will decide for breadths and other random classes later.

also, would german r5b be a good idea for this?

bump? i think it would be better to do econ101b, since it is a prereq…but i should still probably get into math 54 phase 2, right?

From what you say about reading&writing being your first priority, sounds like you are a sophomore? Personally, i think signing up for reading&writing early is definitely great if you want those “easier” R5b classes - like german, slavic languages, italians etc. But i think if you still have some chance of getting into unpopular reading and writing classes during phase 2 (at least i did… for complit r1b)

And onto your other two main classes, I think you should definitely sign up for econ101b, since it is a prereq. I don’t have experience with math 54, so hopefully so other people can help you out then. But since 54 have two pretty big lecture, then change of you being able to get in during phase 2 1s still pretty strong You can always aim for an earlier waitlist position as well. I had similar experience with physics 8a (two big lecture, but with no waitlist) and i was able to squeeze in during adjustment period.

Hope that helps

I would phase I Econ 101b and german r5b. The good lit courses always fill up fast. 101b has less seats and is pretty popular, however many people end up dropping it (if it’s anything like 101a). But I think math 54 is a definite phase II class.

Good luck!

What year are you in? Being a freshman who hasn’t taken either class, I don’t have a really definitive answer for you, but check out how many spaces are left for each, and put the more popular one in for phase I. If you want german r5b, that should definitely go into phase I.

Math 54 has a total of 811 possible seats, and econ 101b only has 60 seats - so I agree with your second post. If you are a freshman, you are technically “ahead” in math, so that’s just something to think about. On the other hand, if you are a sophomore, which you seem to be, major prereqs are WAY more important than math 54 since you want to to go into econ (a capped major). Either way, my answer is the same. Remember, you can change your choice as long as spots are open and it is under the unit limit, so watch how the numbers go, and try talking to people who have taken both courses.

Another thing to note is that 54 has a good chunk of “new stuff,” and is supposed to be pretty interesting - meaning as long as you don’t forget all about differential equations and all the previous math you have done, even on the off chance that you don’t get it, you should be able to manage.

yeah i’m a sophomore. have to finish reading and writing before end of soph year…which is next semester lol. so yeah, i’ll phase one r5b.

yeah, i’m also thinking of a math major or whatever, so math 54, i’m definitely taking. but i’ll phase 2 it, like you guys said. thanks!
