What to send for verification

OK, we'd been flagged for verification when we filed the FAFSA and the deluge of emails and letters for colleges, all asking for various documentation, has started.

One school has asked for W-2s. Would this include a 1099G (for unemployment) if we have it? My husband says no, I'm not so sure. Then again, they didn't mention 1099's, just W-2s.

Another school wants a copy of our 1040 and "any attached schedules required." Ok, so I have a Schedule A and a Schedule M, which make it easy. But I also have a Form 8863 for Education Credits, a Form 2106-EZ for Unreimbursed Employee Business Expenses, a Form 8283 for Noncash Charitable Contirbutions. Do I send those as well? They were submitted electronically with our return. Again, the school is asking for a signed copy of our 1040 and any attached schedules.

I don't want to have to make a ton of copies of stuff I don't need to send and I don't want to send superfluous stuff and info they haven't asked for.

Is there anyone who can give me a quick answer to my questions? I’d like to get this taken care of and in the mail tomorrow. Thanks.

If they only ask for w-2s, but not 1099s, then just send them the w-2s. When they say “any attached schedules”… personally I just send schedules, but not forms, worksheets or anything not called a “schedule.”

The general rule of thumb is send them what they ask for, and not things they don’t ask for.

Thanks - that’s what I was thinking. We just bought a new ink cartridge the other day, before we received all these notices, and I’m watching it slowly disappear!

I’ll be so glad when this entire college process is finished and my son has made a decision. It feels like it’s been dragging on for a year! Then I guess I can just worry that he keeps his scholarships - can’t win! :)
