I am applying to a college in which I am instructed to: "attach a statement that will allow the admissions committee to know you better. It is to be one page in length and on any topic that you choose"

All the other colleges that I am applying for have distinct prompts. Is "personal statement" just another word for "essay", where I focus on one distinct topic, such as a person who has influenced me? Or am I supposed to discuss multiple things?

Sorry guys, I feel stupid asking this question. But, truth is, I have no idea on what I am supposed to talk about.

Side question: Also, they say to talk about extenuating circumstances, how good of a student you are, why you choose that major/college, etc. in your essay. What if your essay prompt is to "talk about someone who has influenced you" (or something else that is specific)? How do I incorporate these seemingly unrelated things into one essay?
