What to wear when it is COLD!

hi.
i was wondering (for those who currently attend or are attending in the fall with me) what type of clothing you are bringing for the winter. as i have mentioned before, i am from san diego california… it doesn’t really get cold here ever, and when it does you just throw on a sweatshirt and your’e set. long underwear is a foreign concept. i was hoping we could start some sort of comprehensive list of warm clothing that students find necessary. my mom keeps saying that ‘you just have to layer all your clothes because the classrooms and dorms will be heated’ this confuses me. she also mentioned i should leave my flip-flops at home–i love flip flops! haha ok, now i’m just rambling.

thanks! marta

Hello! I live near Beloit- in Illinois- so I can give you an idea about the weather. It gets cold in the winter- it can go 10 below zero easily. The worst year I remember it went to -28F. And that was actual temperature, not wind chill. Now that I scared you, believe me when I say that that hardly ever happens. You will need a winter jacket, you might want to buy it in Wisconsin. It won't get really cold until Dec. Hats are essential and scarves are nice too. Mittens and gloves are also very necessary. If Beloit plows their sidewalks, you may be able to get by without boots. Your mom is right about layering- t shirt, sweatshirt, jacket. Buildings are hot- you take a layer off. But bring your flip flops, they are popular here too. Have fun at Beloit, its a great school!

MJB06- just so don't change your mind on Beloit, that really cold winter happened 20 some years ago. Last winter, I don't know if it even got below 0 degrees.

thank you for the reply, i appreciate it. i definitely won't change my mind on beloit (i love it!) i just want to be prepared for the weather.
what kind of qinter coat? like a pea-coat, or like one of those marshmello (down?) jackets? seriously, i am clueless!

thank you!

My daughter wears a wool pea coat all winter. Many, many kids wear down or some sort of filled winter jacket. Those are more useful if you are going to play in the snow and may even be warmer. Again, you may like to wait to buy one until you get here and see what everyone else is wearing.

You should definitely wait until you get to Beloit before buying your warm jacket. They don't sell anything warm enough in California, and you will want to see what others are wearing. You can also order winter clothes on line and have them shipped directly to you at Beloit. And since you are from Southern California, chances are good that you will want to play in the snow -- at least your first winter -- so something waterproff is a good idea, and definitely waterproof gloves or mittens are a must. The sidewalks will be plowed, but boots are still a good idea. And don't leave your flip flops at home, you will get plenty of opportunities to wear them.

you will learn to layer.
