I’ve used an LL Bean since Freshman year. However, I probably won’t use it when I start college.

I almost always end up carrying all my binders, notebooks, and folders in my book bag. I now have permanent damage in my right shoulder because of the weight.

No choice though. Too much stuff for my locker, every class every day, and only a few minutes to get to class make it slightly difficult to compromise.

Thankfully, college should (literally and figuratively) take a load of shoulders. I will have a room to keep my supplies in and only a few classes everyday…

But my LL Bean has served me well. Before we finally shoveled out the money for it, I would need a new back pack every year. My LL Bean hasn’t even started to fall apart. =P

Yeah… like my right shoulder hurts me really badly at the moment, and lately my backs been hurting me. I think it has to do with the fact that on a daily basis… I’m carrying anywhere from 40 pounds (on a light day) to 80 pounds in my bookbag. That’s a bit ridiculous.

I think block scheduling is literally good for your health because you have way less of a load to carry around.

@AUGirl- Agreed. Less stuff needed per day takes a lot off the weight load. My book bag has ruined my right shoulder. Well, more accurately, whatever muscles go with my right shoulder blade [/anatomy fail]. If I sit in the wrong position for too long, it’ll start to ache really badly.

Jansport—lavender and orange plaid on a white background. I’m thinking I’ll get a black or navy blue bookbag next year, so it won’t look so dirty—I’m really rough on my bag for some reason.

I had a nice LL Bean canvas one for a couple years but the bottom ripped out of it, probably because I tend to take my backpack off in a bit of a violent way. Now I have this really cheap black jansport one which I don’t really like, but I think I can deal with it for a year until college.

Sooo comfortable. And I also use it for hiking/camping during the summer lol, so it retains its usefulness. It cost me over $100, but it’s definitely worth it.

I use a messenger bag my cousin gave me, it has the logo for the “Siemens” company on it.

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve stopped using binders (I just use pocket folders, empty them out when they get ragged), and I rarely carry more than 1-2 textbooks per day (we have block scheduling). I rarely use them in most classes anyways. Rarely more than 10 lbs.

I don’t even use binders. I have two five-subject spirals, and then seven folders (you know the kind that are ten cents a piece), and then this year… I had 8-9 textbooks on me at a time.

Binders are too heavy and take up too much space.

A black L.L. Bean backpack. I think it’s called “turbo-transit” or something. Very durable and is about 15 inches wide. Perfect for the 1-inch binders PER CLASS plus textbooks. I’ll probably rethink this system and opt for someting lighter. I’ve gotten in the habit of carrying my backpack on one shoulder too :/

Any suggestions for a better system? Would one large binder (say 2-3 inches) work better? I tend to use loose-leaf paper rather than notebooks anyways.

You should try the five spiral/folders. It really works well. You can just tear out the paper from the five spiral and make it ‘loose leaf’ and then save it in the folder.

Worked for me with my nine classes this year. (Only seven were academic though.)

I just used my tote bag, because I didn’t have any binders. I had one general-purpose folder for all of the stuff my teachers gave me (not much). I kept binder paper in one side (in case of tests), and stuffed worksheets in the other half. I usually got an average of three papers a week, so it was pretty manageable. We were supposed to bring our textbooks, but do you think I was a good enough student to actually care? Most of the stuff I kept in my bag was practical stuff. Like the Hello Kitty mirror I got from San Francisco, the mirror my mom got me for my birthday, a bottle of water in case I got thirsty, a small pillow for class usage, a handkerchief too expensive for me actually use, etc. etc. etc.
