We have been visiting colleges the last few months in the Long Island area. My daughter is a high school junior at one of the better Long Island high schools. She really liked Stonybrook on our visit there. Right now she is taking the Kaplin SAT prep course. Her last SAT combined was 1620. I think her math was 510 and her English was 520. She also is a 95 average student. She takes her real SAT next week and if she doesn't get what she needs (1800 or better) she will retake it. She has some extra curricular but not a lot. She also does charity work. Looking at the school site it appears she has a good chance of getting in. What are opinions of her chances.

Why not have her come here and speak for herself?

I don’t see what the difference is on who asked the question.

Forgive me, I was in something of a bad mood at the time of the post.

Anyway, the stats look promising, but we’d need to paint a better picture of her before anyone can seriously chance her.

The reason I was asking is that the marks are all over the place. I have seen people with good sat and gpa not get accepted and people with below average get accepted. What kind of EC’s are needed. My daughter does alot of charity but doesn’t have much school EC’s. I can’t get a feel on what is needed.

I think she’ll be fine, though 2000 might be a bit of a better target than 1800, since that’s the average.

Hopefully she will get somewhere between 1800 and 2000. She has been getting 1650 on the practice tests. Do you think different majors have different requirements. She wants to major in journalism.
Well any way she takes her real SAT in 2 weeks and then the ACT and then another SAT in June. She is also going to another round of Kaplin classes as soon as the one she is taking ends.

Thanks for your time Blue. Are you a student or do you work in admissions at Stonybrook. I notice you do a lot of these “chances” threads.

I’m actually just a high school senior, but I’m absolutely fanatic about wanting to start college, at Stony Brook of course. I’ve been more anal about policies, future classes, etc. than a proctologist.

The same SAT/ACT requirements apply to everybody, I think. But if you get 1000 on the reading and writing sections combined, you can skip one of the two required writing courses. The other is mandatory, even if you get a 5 on AP Literature AND Composition and publish 17 novels. I’d shoot for a 2000 if possible, if only because it’s above the average, thus a good way to stand out academically.

Stony Brook has an EOP (Equal Opportunity Program) for students who didn’t do well in high school (or went to a crappy one), but can prove that they can do better. With that usually comes some remedial courses. I dunno the full details, but that’s the gist.

To give you an idea, I got in to Stony Brook with a GPA of around a 93, had a 2160 on the SAT, a 30 on the ACT, 650/680/710 on SAT US History, Physics, and Math 1, and a great essay, but not too many ECs.

By the way, does your kid go to Westhampton, per chance?

No my daughter goes to Commack. Those are great marks you have there, I just hope my daughter can come close to them.

Whatever you do, just make sure she stands out to admissions. Ultimately, that’s what matters.
