My parents are letting me get a laptop for UCI, what type of laptop would be best for college use? mac or pc? they gave me a budget of around $700-$800
suggestions?

you’re not going to get a mac for your budget. you could prob get a decent one for around 500

what kind of features are you looking for? are you into gaming? do you need a big screen? do you need long battery life? macs are pretty overrated for the price, in my opinion. btw this is beginning to sound like those “you buy it you keep it” pc commercials. anyways, for my overall laptop answer i tell people is to get a lenovo thinkpad t61. very durable and “professional” looking.

they have the buy a mac n get a itouch deal. so if your parents are willing, they can buy the mac now and then sell the itouch on ebay so your total will round to around 800?

I’ve been doing a lot of researching computer stuff. I have a similar budget (about 1,000 total) and I think Im going to get a toshiba satellite. Seem to get more bang for your buck, and they seem pretty solid

the macbook is still an option. I just checked the UCI computer store site and it has the white macbook on sale for $800, which is at the top of your pricerange

One with lasers.

if one is planning to get a macbook from the UCI computer store, when would be the best time to purchase it?

during freshman orientation (july/august) or when we are moving in in september?

yehh i’ve been thinking about getting a mac just because i want to try something new, since i’ve always used pc…but i’m somewhat worried that if i do get a mac that there will be compatibility issues with programs…

What’s most important is what you want to do with it first.

Now that Apple has finally lowered some prices, you may want to check out the new Macbook Pro (released a few hours ago).
One advantage of the Mac platform is that you can run both Mac and PC software.
Another is that the computers are well-built, and there are fewer security problems (though that could change).
However, the Macs are still more expensive than PCs, harder to upgrade, and some PCs are better for gaming

Snow Leopard is supposed to be released in Sept.
If you buy a Mac (except a mini) before Sept 8, you can get a free iPod Touch.
There’s a discount being offered on printers, too.

In case you didn’t know, you don’t have to buy a computer at the UCI store to get the educational price.

what is this $800 macbook you speak of? show!

There’s a $949 Macbook, no $800 though. And by $800 he meant selling the iPod touch you get with it so you get some money back.

no im talking about this guy. sorry i dont know how to quote. Liquid90

"the macbook is still an option. I just checked the UCI computer store site and it has the white macbook on sale for $800, which is at the top of your pricerange ".

i think im going to get the macbook pro since they lowered the prices.

Oh, I don’t know about the UCI store, I was looking at the Apple site. Personally I’m just going to get a crappy netbook since it’ll be cheaper and because I’m bringing my desktop. I wouldn’t really recommend getting a particularly expensive laptop yet since USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 is coming out next year, but it’s up to you. That’s why I’m going to get a crappy netbook first and I’ll get a better one when they start having the new standards. Sorry for the geek talk haha. =p

oh there was a $800 white macbook for a few weeks on the UCI computer store, but its gone now. There are still some pretty good prices on macbooks though.
