What type of student "fits in" at Boston College?

BC is one of my top choice schools but I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to find like-minded people there, even out of the thousands of students who attend the school. I’ve heard that the stereotype is that all the kids are white, preppy, and upper class private school kids. I go to a public high school and am from a pretty low income family. Would I be able to find students that I identify with and can get along with? Thanks!

I would try to find some low income kids to talk to at BC if this were my kid. Maybe there is a first generation college student organization or something along those lines? I do think you will be able to find your people at most schools.

BC is 70% Catholic & quite preppy. Overlap schools include: Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgetown, & Virginia.

If seeking diversity, BC may not be the best option.

42% receive financial aid at BC.

Yes, a majority of the kids are white, preppy, and upper class private school kids. But I think you can find friends who have the intellect and human spirit to see beyond this box, and BC has a tremendous education to offer you. Since you are from a low income family, heads up that BC is one of a handful of colleges/universities that is both need blind in admissions AND meets full financial need (albeit their definition is tough on the middle-class). Reach out to the Montserrat Office which serves BC students with the highest levels of financial need. They are a fantastic resource. Maybe they can help answer your question about fitting in…which I think is critical to your happiness and success. Good luck to finding the right college for YOU!

AHANA student organization for minority students is probably the most vibrant on campus. Young Dems is the largest. There’s plenty of students from public schools and lower income Catholic schools. The international students are uniformly wealthy. And primarily Asian.

Out of 8300 students, if 25 percent are like you that’s more student in total to be friends with than almost every liberal arts colleges , in it’s entirety.

Also white students from a private school can be your friend too.

My daughters roommate is nearly all aid and has a off campus job too. My daughter is full pay. They are best friends and my daughter works with her at the same off campus job. Finances have never come up once in three years.
