What Uc Schools Should I Apply To?

Hi, I'm planning on applying to the UC school system. But I'm not sure which 4 I should apply to...

I know UCLA and UCB are top names, but are they really that good compared to their education?

I'm from Ohio so i'm out of state. here's my stats

SAT: math 650, reading 660 writing 620

yeah i know i totally blow the math and I'm asian too. for some reason I miss stupid stupid questions.

SAT II
American History 740
Literature: 690

Biology ; pending
MATH IC pending
MATH IIC pending

I have pretty good EC considering where i live,

President of Art club, chess club, Acedemic Challenge
Ohio governor Art Show - 3 year state advancement

Presidental Freedom Challenge scholarship award - for 176 hours of community service in the past 12 months

work at my family resturant about 30 hours a week ( but that's common for asian kids)

started my own photography business

track - lettered 3 years, went to state. hardest worker. conference champ

volunteer at a camp for mentally challenged people - 3 years

and some other stuff, don't wanna bore you

go to a rural school so we have like 3 AP classes and nobody in my school ever heard of the AP test so I didn't know about them until last year when it was too late to self- study for them.

so anyways what campus should i apply for? I want to be a doctor (surprise surpise! lol) but i'm totally laidback so i want a smaller and personal school?

thanks!!

UCB and UCLA are reaches... same with UCSD.

You could try some of the other ones though, Davis, Irvine, SB, Santa Cruz, Riverside and Merced are all great schools.

Why UCs? You don't give GPA, but based on sats you probably wont get into the top ones (B, LA and SD) OOS. They are also not a good bargain OOS at $40K/yr (most taking more than 4 years to graduate) with almost no aid for OOS students. Also, they have some mean curves making the high GPA needed for med school difficult. You can do better for $40K.

I'd have to echo what others have said...you'd have a hard time getting in to the top UCs. Despite the increased use of comprehensive review, the top UCs are really grades/number driven. At my school, anyone who has gotten straight As during grades 9-11 will get into UC Berkeley as long as SAT scores are above 1650 or so.

UCSD, UCLA, and UC Berkeley are likely out of reach. Try mid tier UC's like UCI/UCSB/UCD. Compute your UC GPA, that would help a lot in figuring your odds at the mid tier UC's.

btw: UC's are $40k OOS, and finaid is a LOT of self-help. IMO, for that kind of money, you might find better value at a private school. For example, UCDavis over-enrolled 1,000 Frosh this year, changing dorm double to triples, and lounges into quads. Not sure a sardine-like existence is worth $40k.

I noticed that you mentioned you wanted a small, personal school. IMO, the UCs are NOT going to give you that experience. You also mentioned that you're premed so I'd recommend a small LAC. Check out Hiram (really strong bio program), Lawrence, Beloit, et al. One of my interests is in biochem and I know that these schools have excellent bio offerings.

All good advice up there. Don't think you have to major in chem or bio to be a doctor. You're going to spend four years in med school -- they'll teach you all the biology you'd ever want to know. Find a major you think is interesting and just make sure you do the pre-reqs for med school. Even med schools like diversity. My favorite internist has his BA in Sociology, and said he had his pick of medical schools in part because he wasn't just another bio or chem graduate (full disclosure: he's also scary-smart).

Thanks for the fast replys! Yeah i was planning on majoring in psychology and also meeting the requirements for med school.

So I take it that the UC schools are expensive for out of staters? what other colleges would you suggest? what bout Mary Washington U?

Definitely take a look at U. Mary Washington. The campus is beautiful, the students are very friendly, and academics are strong. I don't know how strong their psychology program is but a quick look at the number of professors teaching in the area and the courses offered will tell you everything you need to know. It's reasonable for an out-of-state student but I'd think you'd better be prepared to pay the whole bill out of pocket.
